As noted in this thread, I've played in the WRGPT, an e-mail poker tournament for the last 3-4 years.

The tournament requires very little time or effort, and actually gets pretty competitive once things settle down after a couple of weeks. Last year was my best performance by far, as I finished 35th/726.

Registration is underway for WRGPT25 -- it's free and open to anybody: http://www.wrgpt.org/registration/part2/

Anyone interested in a PCF last longer? Does $20 sound good?

If so, reply here and indicate what your screen name will be for the tournament (mine is "Aaron Todd"). I'll PM about collecting funds later.

In as Mental Nomad.

I'm game for a Last Longer, but not voting on amount before we see how many people are in... and does it matter if some of use are seated at common tables? It seems intuitive that it would be unfair to those people seated at the same starting table...But maybe not...

It's all part of the game. Some people play this as a LL in other groups, others just jam/fold for 2-3 weeks until they bust every year. Lots of people do LLs in all sorts of tournaments, and since there's no way to control starting tables, you just have to live with where you get seated. Not sure it's an advantage or a disadvantage.

Well, yeah, it's fair that it's random who gets seated unfairly, but... isn't the variance in poker high enough?

OK, ok, I'm in for anything up to $20, too.

Practice round is underway. There's still time to register. For new folks, you need to reply "BACK" to the message you just got, by default you start the tournament on vacation, and you have 24 hours to respond back or you just post and fold until you do.

Yeah, you can't join the practice round in the middle, but you can still sign up for the real thing (and the LL). Looks like we'll have a good group by the time this thing kicks off -- I'll send out a PM once we have a final number to let everyone know how we'll handle the LL buy-in and payout.

Practice round was extended because they're upgrading something and it's taking longer than expected. Still time to sign up!

I count seven players in so far. Let me know if you want to sign up, and once the tourney starts I'll PM payment info.

A few tips to WRGPT newbies, in case you haven't memorized the manual.

  1. You need to reply to the message that contains your unique tourney ID, not the e-mail that lists the action in the hand.
  2. You can customize how often you want to receive mail. I set mine for "READ JUST ME" and then only get messages when I'm in the hand, and at the end of each hand.
  3. Your "office hours" are 9 hours a day when you say you'll be available via e-mail. If you fail to act after 4 hours during your office hours, you'll be folded and placed on vacation. You'll need to reply "BACK" in order to dealt back in. To set your office hours, send the command "START XX" where XX is the hour (PDT) you'd like your day to start. Since I'm on the east coast, I start my day at 4:00 (7 a.m. ET). If you get a hand in the last few hours of your office hours and don't act before the next morning, you're fine, so long as you act before four total hours have passed during your official office hours.
  4. Advanced actions are your friend. There's a bunch of simple ones (you'll use FOLD the most), but you can get pretty creative with it, which helps automate the process. For instance, the following command is explained below:
IF/P<=700 POT
IF/P=900 CALL
IF/P=1100 CALL

This tells the dealer that if the pot is less than or equal to 700, bet the pot. If the pot is 900 or 1100, you want to call. If the pot is any other amount, you'll get an option of what you'd like to do.

Happy to answer any other questions as you start the tournament. Good luck everyone!
