Why exactly? I see absolutely nothing political in this discussion? Just because it is uncomfortable and not about chips it should be hidden? Some of us don't have social media and enjoy the other topics that can be discussed on the forum.

Joke in the comments of the YouTube video...

"Why did Willy hit Chris with an oper hand? Because paper beats rock everytime!" LOL corny but funny! Or was that Also political? I am so confused

People shouldn’t make fun of other peoples medical conditions. Period.

I think he did the right thing and I would do it myself in the same situation if he was making fun of my wife.

Fuck Chris Rock
So you are pro violence?

Lol

The joke was terrible and in poor taste. I don't think violence was the answer though. I don't look at Will Smith the same now.

I think it was real. Will smith was rattled and so was Chris rock. But they did already make up.

The joke was as tame as it could possibly be. It’s not like he made a joke about cancer or something that wrecks people’s lives. Its hair. Smith comes off looking like a thin skinned bitch even before taking into consideration the waterworks.

smith has always been a bitch though so nothing new here.

Lol all of this stuff is scripted. Zero chance this wasn’t a set up. And I don’t need numbers to prove it. Nothing in Hollywood is real. I refuse to give this attention.

Couldn't agree more on not giving it any attention (ironic I know since we're posting in a thread about it).

It felt scripted to me because shouldn't there be security to stop ANYONE from going onto the stage unless you're explicitly scheduled to be on there? If that's not in the operating procedures of any of these award shows, it sure as hell will need to be now. Otherwise, an assaulted party sues the ever living shit out of the assailant, the venue, and the governing body hosting the ceremony with freaking video evidence of said assault occurring.

It looked completely fake to me. The body motion of that slap did not seem natural at all. Hell, Will Smith even laughed at the "joke" initially. I didn't realize it was even supposed to be real until the second time Will Smith screamed "Keep my wife's name out of your MFing mouth" (go watch the unedited version if you haven't seen it). But I also don't see any upside for anyone to fake this. It makes the Academy and Will Smith look really bad. Like career damaging bad for Will Smith.

If it is real it seems to me to be the reaction of someone with low lack of confidence or other self esteem issues. Jada cheated on Will with one of their son's friends. This seems like some BS high school overcompensation bravado thing to make yourself look more "manly". That doesn't look good on anyone. Additionally, think about the fact that he is displaying violence in front of millions of families in the pursuit of defending his family and love. That doesn't square up at all. It isn't about that. It was a very selfish act about his own insecurities.

The joke was in bad taste and Jada is probably owed an apology, but it doesn't necessitate violence.

The saddest part of all this to me is that NOBODY saw this live cause nobody watches award shows anymore but EVERYONE knows this happened because people need their click bait.
I was watching because I had some bets on winners. :D Not money actually, but another uhhh currency.

Strongly disagree here. Rock's comment was maybe not in the best taste, but he is a comedian and gets a pass. I'm of the mind set he could stand up there and say anything he wanted, and Smith or anyone else has no right to resort to assault and battery. In this case, with how mild everything was, it really shows Smith as a violent, thin-skinned, entitled baby. I knew he was a bit uhhh different with the open relationship and his Scientology ties, but this shows how out of touch with reality he is. Def. lost points in my book. And if you don't agree with my opinion on this, just come smack me, LOL.

Cynicism annoys the hell out of me, so that's where I'm coming from. But if this was staged or scripted or fake or whatever you cynics want to call it, would Will have been seen laughing, initially? And I'm not even going to try to read into the laugh, whether it was genuine, polite, nervous or whatever. But if you were planning on a violent reaction, I don't think you'd do that first.

Also, fuck the Academy for not kicking his bitch ass out after the event. I don't think they needed to tackle him to the ground or anything, but when he sat back down, they def. should have sent a few security guys over to "ask him to leave." And then once he's out of the building, call the cops.

And as things played out, Smith could have saved a ton of face here. All he had to do was apologize to Rock and the Academy etc. for losing his temper. But no - he gave some bullshit overly long talk about how he's an "overprotective father" and all the shit he's going through, etc. Give me a break. I wish I was there...I would have been booing him during his award speech after that shit went down, LOL.

@Ben8257 - Because of this :sneaky:

I agree with @ekricket - he shouldn't have said anything unless he knew it was okay. People (in entertainment or other) don't seem to know how to be sincere any more. It would have been better for Chris to say 'our thoughts and hearts are with you' but that's not how our culture is running these days.

I will say this, I'm not 1/2 as classy as Chris Rock is though, the way he took it on the chin, literally, and then laughed about it, then didn't file a police report. He took responsibility for his words, Class Act imo too.

This was a great show of people being decent people all around.

Also this:

Context matters a lot. This was Chris Rock doling out a light roast. If you can't take the heat, GTFO the kitchen.

...giving out a light roast to people whose profession is acting and who live and make money off of public attention and have been subjected to light roasting and tabloid nonsense for decades.

It doesn't mean they deserve roasting and criticism, but they should know how better to respond professionally to it.

Everyone has an opinion. I rather enjoyed seeing someone stand up for their wife opposed to the media scrutiny that inevitably follows. Good for Will and congrats to him for the long awaited Oscar

What?

Man I don't see it that way. Rock makes a joke in arguably bad taste. Smith loses his temper and physically assaults him on stage, then berates him.

You could argue Rock wasn't being decent with his off-color joke, but FFS, it's a god damn Awards show, expect some light roasting. And then Smith losing his temper - no where NEAR decent behavior.

I do agree that Rock handled it as well as he possibly could after it happened. Class act there on the recovery. Although a part of me wishes he would have ripped Smith a new one, and I think he wanted to. He mumbled something like "I could..." then thought better of it, and moved on with the show.
