I’ve spent my entire life in negotiating. I absolutely hate negotiating in my everyday transactions. Houses, cars, poker chips, etc. Offer a price, even if its a bit high, I’m going to pay for the convenience and the expected customer service that follows and ensues.

With this being said….

When someone approaches me to sell chips and they don’t have a number in mind and they are asking me to invite the number they are simply trying to take advantage of my good nature non-negotiating willingness to pay above market on PCF.

IF YOU ARE SOLICITING A SALE, or NEGOCIATING A TRADE WITH SOMEONE, and YOU ARE THE ONE WHO BEGAN THE CONVERSATION DO NOT INVITE THE NUMBER!

You are simply looking to take advantage of someone for their lack of knowledge or willingness to pay top dollar for something.

Easy decision.

So I typed out a sarcastic, snarky response, but I deleted it and decided to post a very heartfelt, genuine one.

Dude, you’re amazing. You want what’s fair for all parties involved. I’ve seen you lose money on deals and make money on deals, but it’s never been about the money, it’s been about doing what you truly believe is fair and worth your time.

I’m grateful to have met you and even more grateful you’re only like 50 mins from me :)

Fu(% those people who try to haggle with you (us) for a few dollars. It’s not worth your time or energy.

You’re one of the good ones. Sorry there’s people who try to take advantage of that. It’s silly because I know for a fact that with your background and experience you could easily negotiate the $h!t outta them if you really wanted.

Booyah George right back at ya

If I send someone a PM, and it was unsolicited, by all means it’s okay for the “perceived” seller who wasn’t in the market to sell something to invite the number.

But don’t PM,

Hey I’m thinking about selling these chips, are you interested? I don’t know the sale price, even tho I built the set myself, want to make an offer?

GTFO

You were just afraid to be perceived as a flipper and there’s nothing wrong with that just state the price you’re going to sell something and stick behind it or list it at auction. You know internally what it would take to sell them for so just post your price.

This happens ALL THE TIME. So don’t take it too personal after someone just tried this at me. But do take it a bit personal so you change your ways.

And I’ve even put up with it before. Just because I’m so god damn addicted to chippin, but now I’m so flush in chips go fuck urself.

I think most people don’t know how to negotiate or feel bad when they give a price…

Maybe you should run a course :)

We could combine forces and run a “how to negotiate and catch cheaters” lol

Not saying it’s ok for them to be fishing. Just saying I know I was similar my first few years on here.

I’m a bad negotiator. I just say “fuck it I’ll pay it” or “nope”

I actually had a member call me out for not coming back with a counter-offer lol

I'm guilty of this because I'm lazy and didnt want to search for a price, sorry @Bacon Dad! Well put, hadn't thought of it this way.
I think once in a while when negotiating in good, fair spirit is one thing. No one is trying to take advantage of anyone else.

It’s those who are fishing for a stupid low or high price that are frustrating

DUDE - yes, 100% - I hate that.

I negotiated corporate contracts as my day job, now I manage other people negotiating deals/contracts. Normally these deals are large and require months, sometimes 12 - 18 mos of strategic planning.

I too hate negotiating outside of that as I find it tedious, let’s just fast forward and be reasonable.

I tend to walk away from “give me a number” deals almost out of principle- lol. If I really want whatever it is, I offer low and say counter if it’s too low. This is a quick way to find out if they are shopping around for the highest “offer”.

Easiest person to sell is a salesman himself

Eff sales, salesman, haggling, and unpublished pricing.

Paying someone to buy a house
Paying some to buy a car
Paying someone to tell me what I owe in taxes
Someone asking for $5 off a rack via pm

Wait…this isn’t the things you hate thread…..

Sorry booyah, I get it, it sucks. Most members I've dealt with are decent people, but, there are those you can count on to be douchebags, or, do douchebagery stuff. Like the poet says, shake it off, shake it off.
Yeah it’s more of a warning to others that may not be self aware how much of a deuche move it is

Agree with all of this! Also, on a related note but not completely the same, I had the most tilting back and forth with a potential *buyer* recently that really put me in a bad mood.

Buyer responds to a sales ad I had up last week and begins to engage me in conversation etc. Asks me what I could do in various scenarios (some of which include me having to do some additional leg work), asks me for more photos, OK all good fair enough. Then when I have gone through the trouble of responding to the different questions/requests/scenarios, this guy offers me almost 50% of what I am asking for. I just… I don’t get it. I told him it felt disrespectful and to have a good night.

Please don’t do this if you are a buyer, don’t waste peoples time! State up front what you are willing to spend especially if you are requesting the seller to do additional work for you.

When I am new, I am often afraid of offering / putting a price on something (I am still not comfortable TBH). These things take times to learn and not an easy skill to pick up.

And for me now, there is always a different pricing for

Flipper - Min Market pricing + some mark up
Chipper - Market pricing (maybe some discount for some nicer chipper)
Close Friend - Cost or below Cost

Nothing happens ever without salesmen…mostly.

Yeah the other things you highlighted are jobs and structures of the business.

This is a forum / hobbyist / trading site.

I’m not sure which is worse - the ridiculous low ball offer or the insanely high asking price followed by the “well, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” :ROFLMAO:

That's just a slap in the face.
50% cmon.
Never had that bad but being ghosted after multiple pics, weighing, getting shipping quote isn't much better. Had a few of those.

Most of the time I don't try to offer less unless I know for sure they sold cheaper recently or know they paid less than asking price. 50% tho. no way! Usually somewhere between previous sale prices and asking price.

Had a few deals not go through on not offering discounted shipping totalling a few dollars. Oh well. Many guys on here don't waste the time offering actual shipping quote doing flat rate box or winging shipping price. Most of us could make that tiny difference in cost working less time than it takes to package, weigh, check and send the quote.
It's kinda tempting to check a few zipcodes and charge everyone a flat rate just to save the time and hassle of checking every darn time. The reason I don't tho is just one or two customers paying a few bucks more than it actually costed may get rubbed wrong way, feel burned by it and make life difficult.

I've also had a few opposite end of the spectrum. Private pm response to wanted listing with a really reasonable deal on exactly what I was looking for.
I had no idea what they were worth but after searching prior to saying yes to the deal I couldn't find a single previous sale for cheaper. Most were about 10-25% more. A few months later he asked if I wanted a few more of the chips. Why yes I do :) He is a reasonably long time member with hardly any posts here.
There's some good guys like him flying under the radar and I really appreciated the good deal.
There's a lot of well known members here giving amazing deals too.
For the most part this is a very reasonable group of members.

Some times it is hard coming up with a price on items nobody else has sold.
Sometimes I feel I'm too low for amount of work but 99% of the time nobody questions the price or offers less.
I've had one single transaction ever where a customer asked for an item free. Heck ya I can do that and planned on it before he asked but now I know what to give as the free item helped me and him out. Win win. Negotiating or asking doesn't have to be disrespectful. Sometimes it's helpful like this.
