Thanks Chippy!
Yet another thread that reminds me how old I am as I read these lists and realize I've never heard the vast majority of these songs or artists

Otherwise making such a list is impossible

You're not that old, and happy birthday btw.

Limited to one song per artist, in no particular order, more or less from the top of my head:

Where is my mind - Pixies
Happines is a warm gun - The Beatles
Venus in furs - The Velvet Underground
There is a light that never goes out - The Smiths
Ballad of a thin man - Bob Dylan
Sympathy for the devil - Rolling Stones
Be my wife - David Bowie
Search and destroy - Iggy and the Stooges
The mercy seat - Nick Cave and the bad Seeds
Rid of me - PJ Harvey

Beds Are Burning -- Midnight Oil
...
This is a great song, one that I've been surprised hasn't been picked up as an anthem for the progressive or environmental peeps.

From the Beginning - Emerson Lake and Palmer
Stairway
Breath - Pearl Jam
Two Step - DMB
The Stone - DMB
Old Pine - Ben Howard
Yesterday - Beatles
Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones
Dinner with Ivan - Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Could easily substitute Bittersweet
Breakdown Tom Petty
Darkstar - Grateful Dead
Bouncing Round the Room - Phish
Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel
Suite for solo cello #1 in G major - JS Bach as performed by Yo-Yo Ma

No order.

7.Shape of My Heart-Sting

I remember being a teenager with my dad when he was shopping for a new tv/sound system for the living room. We were in some high end boutique electronics shops (that pretty much do not exist anymore, incidentally) and the guy used this song to demonstrate the quality of the stereo and some weird screen saver type thing on the tv (pre-LCD/plasma obviously) to demonstrate the television at the same time.

Had never had any patience for Sting's solo stuff until this point, but I loved the song then and still do.

The mercy seat - Nick Cave and the bad Seeds
Rid of me - PJ Harvey

Both of these were contenders for me. The Mercy Seat will pretty soon be regard as a modern standard imo. Unbelievable tune.

this list inspired when I saw toby's lists

my band once planned this as a set list:

Dancing With Myself - Billy Idol
I touch Myself - Divinyls
She Bop - Cindy Lauper
Turning Japanese - The Vapors
Longview - Green Day
Orgasm Addict - Buzzcocks
Pictures of Lilly - The Who
Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes
Pump it Up - Elvis Costello
Darling Nikki - Prince

The Top Ten songs of all time about masturbation.

We only learned about half of them, and never played the planned all masturbation set, but the ones we learned saw regular rotation at our gigs. 25 years later we still play turning japanese, that song is a blast and belongs on my original list with Rio by Duran Duran.

No Basket Case? Edit: n/m thinking of Longview

BTW I've been annoying Keri no end tonight: when we review her top 10 and we get to the New Order track, I launch into "There ain't nobody with thieeeeeeeeeves... like us!" In a Paul McCartney stylee. High-larious. EVERY TIME!!!

I can't believe no one has put down Elvis

Hey, I've been putting down Elvis since 1956 or so.

But you're right: I should have listed "Allison." My problem is that I can never decide which version I like best, his or Everything but the Girl's.
