Paulsons vs CPC Customs (1 Viewer)

Hello! I currently own a Paulson cash game set (pictured in my avatar) and one of the (many) reasons I finally decided to join this forum is to get the downlow from some of you folks on CPC customs vs actual Paulsons. How do they actually compare? The idea of selling my Paulsons and purchasing the ultimate custom set to end all custom sets has crossed my mind, especially after spending some time browsing the custom sets database here. (My god, that Barrel House set is immaculate!) Or, I could just own a set of both. . .

Anyway, if I'm used to Paulsons and they way they shuffle, stack, and sound, how likely would I be to actually use a CPC set? Would it just be a decorative set on my shelf, or would I ever shelf my Paulsons for the CPCs? I do love the idea of designing something with the color palate of my choosing and creating a custom logo. Any thoughts from you folks who own both? Did you end up shelving or selling one in favor of the other? If so, why? Thanks in advance.

That’s the only way. There are so many threads on this site discussing the differences between the two brands, and the differences are significant. So you can and should do some searching and reading. But unless you don’t mind spending thousands of dollars sight unseen, you need to see, feel, and hear them for yourself.

Honestly you’ll need to get samples from cpc of each mold since each mold feel different.

CPC set will likely have very sharp edges upon delivery, so they may not shuffle like a used set of Paulsons out of the gate. However, the quality is top notch.

Definitely get samples of the different molds and spend some time with them before investing in an "purchasing the ultimate custom set to end all custom sets."

Completely depends on your outlook / preference and how often you play. I have like 15 major sets, a mix of Paulson, CPC, BCC, ceramics and hybrids, and host 15-20 games a year. They all see play, but I love variety. My customs probably get played the most.

Great advice. Thank you. I have a habit of making compulsive buys, so I should probably spend some time to make sure I do this right the first time. I should probably just order some samples of each one and see what really gets me excited. I wasn't aware there were so many molds available either!

If I could have fully custom Paulson's that is the route I'd go. But since I can't, I have a mix of casino Paulson's and custom CPCs. I prefer the Paulson's for their feel and colors. On the flip side I prefer CPCs for the custom aspect and the price point.

Pick the CPC molds you like the most visually and get a shuffle stack (10-20 chips) of each. The mold sample set with just one of each isn’t enough imo.

You can probably find them from members here by creating a wanted ad (and you can sell them again once you’re done). And if not CPC likely will have extras you can buy.

tl;dr

Entry level Paulson's most RHC / Bike tires / sub $2 suffer from crappy colors (I'm a Cali guy) or just not the set you love. CPC are the chips I can design, feel great, shuffle well, and be a topic of conversation in the game.

Higher end Paulsons that have a high demand cost so much money and currently they are hard to get the value out of, but they are typically close to mint and bright colors or they are old and leaded or a combo of both.

So I did both, I knew I would want a set of Paulsons and over paid for them so that I would love them and not need to cry more than once.

I own Paulsons and I own CPCs. All my sets see play. They’re both great in their own respects, as others have mentioned above.

YMMV, but for me, there’s something special about creating your own custom set from scratch that can’t be matched by even the nicest “standard” Paulson sets.

Excellent point, and it should be noted that the same applies to CPC. There are some great CPC molds, and others that I wouldn't touch (looking at you, A-Mold).

Stick with Paulsons, for now.

CPC customs are end-game. 99% of the time, they will not retain close to their purchased value. If you're early in chipping, you aren’t going to make a good set or one you will like down the line, as it’s too early to even know how your tastes and knowledge will evolve. You won’t recoup nearly what you could from most Paulson sets you decide to part with.

No chips feel better than nicely broken in leaded Paulsons, but also nothing feels better than felting or playing with top of the line customs.

I own both, use both Paulson and CPC in a rotation with other premium brand chips, bcc, Chipco, and Abbiati. All have their specific great attributes.

If you do it right, you should feel like your custom set is the GOAT.

Don't have any Paulson. I jumped right in for some CPCs. No regrets.

If I had your set I doubt I'd sell them. I'd just add my customs into the mix.

If you decide to sell your set, which i think you should keep it and have one of each imho, i would love two barrels of those $500s in your avatar.

The main reason i got into this hobby was because i loved how clay poker chips felt at the casino, so i spent a full day researching (googling) what casinos used.

I ended up finding out about Paulsons and eventually ended up here. I obtained my first set, loved them, and have yet the need to go back to the casino to play. With that being said, i obtained my first CPC sample, since i had similar ideas to you, and i also fell in love. The fact that i am able to design my own chip and it's (controversially) similar to the way Paulson's feel, changed the game for me.

I would recommend investing in purchasing a CPC set but grab some samples first.

I am 100% in agreement. There are many talented individuals, stunning design ideas, and sets created by other members or casino grade Paulson chips, but they are not yours and will never truly be yours.
When you invest significant time in researching different CPC molds, ordering samples to feel the texture, designing your unique inlays, matching colors, creating logo, and developing ideas that no one has thought of before, your final set becomes so personal and unique that it cannot be compared to any A+ class casino chips. Remember, you infuse your energy and creativity into designing your own set. That will ALWAYS make your set superior to any others on the market. Take your time and enjoy the precess. Time and your energy > quick success

Based on preference. I like shuffling leaded slightly worn IHCs. Some people like leaded TRK Scrowns. Some people prefer leaded THCs.

I have shuffle stacks of most of the popular CPC molds. You are going to get all different opinions on the mold that shuffles the best so imo there is not a consensus on 'best'. Some molds have a bit of a break in period where they are hard to shuffle brand new. Now, the best shuffling mold when they are brand new is CSQ. They shuffle the best right out of the box and I strongly feel that mold feels and shuffles more like a Paulson chip than any other mold.

Now, the best shuffling mold when they are brand new is CSQ.

Agreed here. The texture on this mold isn't as rough as the texture on other molds.

Other than that, I'd say it's personal preference. You need to get shuffle stacks of the molds that will work with your theme, wear them in, and figure it out for yourself.

No consensus is absolutely correct.

I maintain that many/most of the CPC molds exhibiting an inner and outer ring will feel, sound, and shuffle closest to Paulson THC mold chips (arguably the gold standard).

Those CPC molds include Diasqr, Jockey, CSQ, B-mold, and HHR, with the heaviest chips scoring the highest (i.e., those with: the fewest or most shallow debossed areas or recess, hot-stamps or no inlay, no unweighted or day-glo colors, the largest diameter or thickness, etc.).

My personal feel / sound / shuffle favorites are Diasqr and Jockey, and if also including closest to THC visually, Jockey mold gets the nod from me.
