Just an informal hello question.

Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye.

Absolute masterpiece.

Feels like a casual 70s movie, but every single detail is brilliantly chosen.

Screenplay by the genius Leigh Brackett (The Big Sleep, Empire Strikes Back).

Score by John Williams (that John Williams) with jazz great Johnny Mercer.

Wild cast including Eliot Gould, Sterling Hayden, Mark Rydell, Nina Van Pallendt, and, improbably, Yankees pitcher Jim
Bouton.

Also features the first feature film appearance by Schwarzenegger (uncredited bit role).

I have seen this movie 10+ times and every viewing reveals some new layer I’d missed.

Bladerunner 2049, Dune II, Inception, Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Casino Royale, La La Land. I dunno, too many favourites.

Secondarily:

Brazil (Gilliam)
The Third Man (Reed)
Blade Runner (Scott)
Local Hero (Forsythe)
Chinatown (Polanski)
Dead Man (Jarmusch)
Dr. Strangelove (Kubrick)

"Favorite" varies a bit by mood or even time of year. There's a half dozen or so that rotate their spot on the top seat:

The Abyss (has to be the director's cut... the story has less impact on numerous levels without the extra material)
The Great Escape (amazing cast and a mostly true story)
2001 A Space Odyssey (had the chance to see this projected in 70mm before the pandemic and saw things that get missed on TV)
Doctor Strangelove (it's a comedy, folks)
Shawshank Redemption (I feel obligated to watch if it's on TV)
The Princess Bride (arguably what is a "perfect" movie)
Spaceballs (IMO, Mel Brooks best work)

There's another dozen that are way up on the list, but these are the ones I think of as my "desert island" list.

The Sting
Jaws
Blues Brothers
Animal House
Midnight Run
Apocalypse Now
Sabrina
Dirty Harry

(In order from favorite at the top)

Star Wars saga ( Can't pick just 1, but Episode 3 (Revenge of the Sith) if you hold a gun to my head)
E.T.
Pulp Fiction
Back to the Future 1

Impossible to pick one single film.

Some of my personal favourites, of the top of my head:
- Tombstone
- Terminator 2: Judgement Day
- The Princess Bride
- Back to the Future (the whole Trilogy)
- Gladiator
- The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
- Inception
- Kill Bill vol. 1 & 2
- Indiana Jones (the original Trilogy)
- The Matrix
- Pulp Fiction
- Boyz N the Hood
- Goodfellas
- The Truman Show
- The Bourne Identity
- The Shawshank Redemption
- The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
- Star Wars Triology (Ep 4-6)

There's certainly films missing from that list.

This. There isn't anyway I can answer this question.

My favorite show is Parks and Rec. I go to sleep to it every night. I think I want a three way with Leslie Knope and Ann Perkins

Impossible to only pick one as mentioned by others, and as my life changes the answer has changed.

One not mentioned yet - Requiem for a Dream

One mentioned a lot - Shawshank Redemption

One most haven’t seen - Synecdoche, New York

One I always put on for my kids - Up

I could easily list 20 more.

Once Upon a Time in the West
Bladerunner
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
High Noon
RocknRolla
Big Trouble in Little China
The Searchers
V for Vendetta
