I was honestly having the discussion at work yesterday. We were discussing environmentalism....which is see more as a "keep it off my lawn and feel good" ideology than actual protectionism for the greater good to a massive extent. An example I used was the idea of forcing conservation of wild elephants through NGO's and lobbying to other nations.....Sounds great but in some of these nations these policies result in wild elephants destroying crops and property. In North America our ancestors shot most of the cougars, wolves, bears etc that would have otherwise harms their livestock/property/families for generations forward. Such policies directly impact other people. My solution is farming of those same elephants, relocating animals to farms would be a prime way to establish these farms.... I know how many people a moose can feed, I can only imagine how many people could be fed by an elephant.
The elephant already died to make the chips. It would be a shame to just waste them now. But depending on how far along the stream of commerce they are, establishing provenance may be a bear.
Elephants are far too intelligent to eat. Don't be a monster. Stick with stupid animals like cows and chickens.
Also, even if we're going to be evil, farming elephants would be an incredibly inefficient way to convert vegetable matter into steaks. Cows are bad enough; elephants would be many times worse per pound of meat.
ELEPHANT STEW | |
1 med. sized elephant 1 ton salt 1 ton pepper 500 bushels potatoes 200 bushels carrots 4, 000 sprigs parsley 2 sm. rabbits (optional) Cut elephant meat into bite size pieces. This will take about 2 months. Cut vegetables into cubes (another 2 months). Place meat in pan and cover with 1, 000 gallons of brown gravy and simmer for 4 weeks. Shovel in salt and pepper to taste. When meat is tender, add vegetables. A steam shovel is useful for this. Simmer slowly for 4 more weeks. Garnish with parsley. Will serve 3, 800 people. If more are expected, add the 2 rabbits - this is not recommended as very few people like hare in their stew. |
