1930s vintage wooden chip holders (1 Viewer)

Hi,

Came across these. Look pretty cool, and if they’re genuine are fairly old (1930s). Not sure if they’re practical though. Horizontal and look more like a scrabble letter holders.

Wondered if anyone else had them and used them? / had thoughts?

Also wonder what the top ledge is for.
