$20 chip or $25 chip?????? (1 Viewer)

For stakes up to $100 buy-in, or games that fracs are used, I prefer $20 chips.

For stakes higher than that, $25s are my preference.

Having said that, it is close... Unless it's a game in which that chip is the workhorse, than it's $25s by a mile for me...

I will say, $20's are the way to go, for ME.. When my players re-buy for 40 or 60 I don't have to worry about change (getting more 5's on the table).

Like the others have stated... it really doesn't matter. The only thing I will add/reinforce is that if your players will be re-buying in increments of $20 up to $100, then $20 is slightly preferred. If your players will be re-buying with $50 or $100, then $25 works fine.

Another thing to consider is the color of the chip... and if you are wanting to stick with more "traditional" colors. Do you want a green chip? Then maybe $25 is your choice. You can be more flexible with the color of the $20 and still be somewhat "traditional."

However as everyone stated... its up to you.

I have played mostly casino games in my life and have a preference for the $25 chip. That being said I dont hate the $20. I think for lower limit games it does make more sense to use a $20 though.

Is that clay ON TOP of that $20 in the foreground? Can't say I've ever noticed that before.

Are you referring to the edge spot near the label? Then yes. The label is only the white area and these are the oversized A-mold.

Oh, I misspoke - I meant to say is that clay on top of the INLAY. Because I thought the inlay had a black border. I didn't realize the black around the white was the base color of the chip. Gotcha. And again nice set - one of my favorite custom quarters ever.

Low stakes game, $20 is the nuts. One chip for one $20 bill and even more so in small stakes limit games its easy to saw a barrel of $1s for a single $20 chip. Anything above $1/2 NL/PL or where it's a red chip limit game, then $25/$100 cannot be beaten. Easier to deal with a barrel of $25 = $500, whereas $20s=$400.

My thought is that if you ever want to expand your set to include tourneys, the $25 chip will work better.

Isn't the general consensus though that it's essential to have separate sets for cash and tournament for the reason of a potential cheat trying to cash out a pocketed tournament chip in a later cash game?

It looks like I'm the one outlier here, but I actually prefer $25 chips in smaller .25/.50 and 1/2 stakes games.

It's what I'm now leaning towards with my Aperture set (I know, photo shows $20), and for one very simple (maybe studid?) reason... it's what I see in casinos.

When I play $1/$2 at Ameristar, or Golden Gates, or even the Venetian, Borgata, or Bellagio $1/$3 games, the chips in play always seem to be $1 - $5 - $25 - and $100s. I completely agree that $20s are easier for rebuys, but I have a weird tick for trying duplicate the "casino experience" in my home games.

If I have to make change, or give a player three greens and a red for a rebuy, so be it.

So much this. This is important particularly if you are inviting players who regularly play in a casino. I have found that the consistent chip colors/denominations will make them more comfortable. If your player group consists of folks who never play in a casino, I suppose your mileage may vary.

Would caution against this, as already stated, cash and tourney sets should not be designed to work together.

I also prefer the $20 for smaller stakes, and $25 for larger stakes. I have a CPC set on order which includes a $20 chip.

I get the concept of mirroring the casinos, but I also don't see many casinos spreading $.25/.50 poker... :)

Yeah, but that doesn't mean that anything you see in a casino is the optimal approach for a home game. Casino actions tend to favor the house, not the players.

Me too, except that I phrase it a bit differently:

I have a weird tick for trying to duplicate or improve the "casino experience" in my home games.

I think it's an important distinction.

Until the casinos start installing hot dog rollers - I've got them all beat  :whistling:

My cash set I just ordered I went with the $20 otherwise I would have to have to dole out 4 chips instead of 2 when someone hands me $40

See very good points on both sides, if I were running a 1-2 or 1-3 NL game I would lean toward the $25 chip more, but since all my cheap friends only want to play .25/.50 or .50/1 going to stick to the $20, I have a Cleveland HS set that works great for my tournaments and I personally like to separate my cash sets from my tournament sets. I am only one of two out of maybe 25 guys that actually goes to the casino to play cards so most do not care either way

No preference. I have cash sets that have $20s and $25s.

I would prefer the $25s as it’s casino standard and my friends buy in in denominations of $50 and $100 bills.

However the chip vendor made me tempted to buy the $20 chip too because they have dark green for $20, medium green for $25!

I use both :

But I prefer to use a $20 over a $25. Mostly because I play more NL20 (.10 - .10) over NL50 (.50 - .50).

If I'd play NL25 (25c - 25c) or NL50 more often then it'd probably be $25.
