99 in the big blind (1 Viewer)

Here needs to, like, read a book or something. And play poker with a real stack.

I'm not sure what else there is to say here.

I though Hero's best option was to shove preflop. DrStrange's range should be plenty wide enough for that to be profitable. As noted earlier, AJs is not going to fold to the all-in but 99 is a marginal favorite over AJs.

I can respect a disciplined set mining plan. In part it is a plan that gives Hero a chance to keep playing a few hands more. Hero is not at the table as an advantage player. He is here for entertainment and social reasons. If he profits, great! But that isn't expected.

I remain curious if folks think folding is better than calling preflop. When I started this thread, I thought set mining was clearly ok if not best. Now I am leaning toward folding is better than calling the raise.

I also wondered why Crazy Jr. was offering poker lessons. Did the bet spoil a play he hand in mind? Did Crazy Jr. want to keep Hero's stack in play? It would be harder to win sitting in DrStrange's stack. Is just trying to help his buddy out? <shrug> Never did get a solid feel for this.

Do we find merit in a flop shove? I lean towards no, but other folks might see it otherwise.

I thought the last bet was spew, just like many other people thought.

I find it helpful to look at an occasional hand from the other player's point(s) of view. Thanks for the advice.

In my opinion, the last non-trivial decision was preflop, and shove > fold > call there.

It's very close between calling and folding, and I can see arguments that calling is worth more than $0. I might agree if we were in position, but OOP we lose a lot of value. It's hard to see much profit there even if we're generous about how often a set will hold up, as well as how much action it will get when it's good.

However, it's not close at all between shoving and calling. Shoving is far superior, no question, for the reasons I covered in my way-earlier post.

Everything after the flop was a clear fold. We're going to run into an ace there the vast majority of the time. It's not worth throwing $44 after an $18 pot in that spot.

I have no problem with the call pre. Prefer shove but a call is fine as long as we plan a check/fold line if we don't hit.

Hero needs to play deeper stacked if possible. This would allow the 3 bet pre flop and the CBET or check/fold option on the flop. As the stack sizes were the preferable play was to jam pre flop IMO.

Hero was broke . . . Reloading / adding on was not an option.

Let's not forget that the short stacked player has the advantage, not the deeper stacked guys. And weaker players should always lean towards playing short. I appreciate that isn't conventional wisdom but it is still the truth.
