A Glimpse Inside the Goldfish Bowl - poker analysis, pr0n and random thoughts (8 Viewers)

just picked up this set from a friend who no longer hosts. The lower denomination (100s and below) came from the poker palace in Montreal which shut down in 2017. The higher denominations I had to custom make with gear labels……..not sure who made the poker palace chips but they are heavy! Anyone know?

look like Chinese sluggos to me. Lange perhaps?

what were the relabels before? look like SF 43mm hybrids.

@mipevi ?

The relabels are Sun Fly for sure. I can’t believe a Canadian casino would use off the rack chips and not go through a casino manufacturer.

Yeah the design certainly looks the same as with Chinese sluggos. The place shut down in 2017 so they are older, no idea about a specific manufacturer.

Went to MD LIVE for the first time in a very long time on Tuesday night for the 5/5/25 5 card plo game. The game was wild, as were the swings……below was my stack mid way through the game.……unfortunately I forgot to take a pic of the final chip stack (which turned out to be a very nice stack of pancakes).

As I continue to explore chip sets other than Paulson, I just received this Oasis bud jones set. I think these chips are really nice - the colors really pop in person. I also think these will hold up much better over time as compared to Paulsons (which get dirty really fast, get worn and chip over time). I am a big fan of these so far. Can’t wait to get these in play.

So, I had an opportunity to play with the Oasis chips recently.

First, the pros - (1) they are absolutely beautiful on the felt. The pics do not do these chips justice. The colors really pop in person; (2) they stack like bricks. Hi stacks are no problem for these chips. Very nice; and (3) these chips are going to hold up way better than clay chips. I don’t have to worry about the players being hard on these. No worries in that department.

Second, the cons - only 1 con IMO - these chips are the same ones used at the borgata in Atlantic City. A lot of people don’t like those chips because the recessed inlays cause a suction making the chips stick together thereby making them difficult to shuffle (plus they are a bit slippery). The oasis chips share the same problem. It’s very hard to shuffle these chips. However, this is a small price to pay when using these chips IMO. I love them anyway. These are a great addition to my chip collection.

I'd be interested to hear if you feel the same way about them a few months down the road, John. I've tried a few times with plastic chips and eventually gravitated back to clay again. I thought the Abbiati Crown Plaza was one of the most beautiful chips I owned but I eventually sold them off in favor of other chip sets.

They will definitely take some getting used to. I will say that a few of the guys didn’t like that they couldn’t shuffle the chips as well as with the Paulsons. They also didn’t like the fact that the 1ks are white. They have become accustomed to blazed orange and yellow. My guys all know the borgata chips well and most don’t like them (the usability, not the look). From a hosting perspective, I like the perceived indestructibility of the chips as compared to the Paulsons. My crew is definitely spoiled when it comes to chips but they have no idea how much these things cost. But, I agree Paulson chips are the top of the line in all respects. I will use them a few more times and report back.

Let your group know how much each respective set costs and see if there opinions change. Its easy to not to like and complain about things when you arent the one paying for it! :cool

Thankfully in Australia our casino all use plastics so chips like Oasis are "casino" quality and feel to us. My playing group knows how much I spend on chips because Im always yelling at them not to splash pots when ever pots and to keep their chips on the table topper. :ROFLMAO:

I really like my Bud Jones chips. I love my Paulsons more, but it’s a nice alternative. And as you mentioned, I don’t have to worry about my idiot friends around them.

What’s nice with the Oasis, is the upper denoms. It was very hard to find a V7 $500 or up chips for a long time. I know you use yours for cash, but I used my upper denoms for tourney and lower for cash. And now there a few sets with the 43mm upper denoms. My set only goes to $500 and they are 39mm. So I picked up a couple racks of the Oasis $1k and the Intercontinental yellow $5k to be relabeled.

I’ve been told the smoking section has its own chips. Sometimes they get mixed in. There’s a different $5 and $25 too, that I know of. Not sure about $500 and up
That is correct. I am not a smoker so I never go out there. I ended up losing both of those chips so I guess it doesn’t matter. #Ineedtoplaybetter.

I will say pot limit Archie is a tough game! Going into the last pluck I am in 3rd place with a set of 4s against a set of Qs and a flush……. Oh, hello 4th 4!! From last place to scoop! Running good like @MatB. #luckisabigpartofmygame.

Almost the perfect night … except @Headhunter13 plucked a steel wheel against my full house!! He drew 3, then 2, then 1. That cost me a few dollars. Haha. Unfortunately no pic of that one.

I wonder why there’s no pic of my Steel Wheel!?!

The first ever .50/$1 circus game is now in the books. It was nice to meet some PCFers I had not met before and see those that I had not seen since the last meet up. Hope to do it again soon!

Thanks again for the hospitality, Jon! After a getting buried early, it was nice to catch some rungood!
