Am I the only one who doesn't like flips? (2 Viewers)

Yup, cave on top of a mountain ridge in the Appalachian foothills. Earlier this year was the first time I'd been to a casino in like a decade.

I only hate flips when I lose.

Casino flips? You guys live in a cave? Been happening for years. It's a bracelet event FFS. Three years running.

They have also been offering main event flips for years.

Single-table flips - a special satellite offering

There is one more type of satellite: the single-table flip. Ten people get dealt three cards and play a single hand of "Crazy Pineapple," which is Texas Hold 'Em with a twist. After the flop, everyone discards one of their three cards. The turn and river are then dealt. At the end of the madness, whoever holds the winning hand wins the entire prize pool.

Single table flips that award entries directly into the Main Event will be available starting on July 2 and will run based on demand until registration closes on July 8 at the end of the level 7 break.
I don't know how I feel about this.

There's a flip! Yay.

But then once I win the flip, I have to play hold 'em? Boo.

Can't call yourself a degen if you don't salivate at the prospect of a neutral EV gamble. Also, for maximum fun they have to be blind, or one hole card exposed and the leader of the hand shows first followed by the rest showing down in order of hand strength for maximum bad beat opportunities.

We often flip to round off change cashing out of a cash game, and when playing DC a round of flips is always an option. We usually do it for a BB or two per hand. Nits have the option of opting out, but you know what they say about nits.

the LAST card out is the one who pays. Maximum sweat as you pull out the safe cards. It's like ya'll aren't even degenerates

Yeah I've been following that one. It's not exactly the same thing that @demonnic described. I probably wouldn't like that one either, but it's not often I have a grand I'd like to throw away. (Didn't Deeb throw away like forty-something of them in the first year?)

Flips to tidy up stack sizes for cash out is alright, but I'm not really a fan of them outside of that at all. If I wanted to just straight up gamble on the outcome of something outside of my control I'd play table games or get robbed by the one armed bandit. The thing I like most about poker is that while there's still an element of gamble to it, it's still largely a game of skill against skill. Flips take that way entirely.

The first time I'd really run into it was at the casino earlier this year though. They were doing $200 10 person flips for $1800 to the winner (casino kept one buy in for their fee I guess). Absolutely bonkers to me but they'd fill 'em up pretty quickly.
That's crazy. The definition of degenerate gamblers...

Like others have said, I play poker for the fun, the excitement, and to develop my skills. I have no issue with sitting down to a decent sized game with $3-400, because I feel like I have some control over winning and losing. Whether that is actually so is still up for debate - LOL. But I have never done a flip. Not even for $10-20. Just don't want to lose my money doing something that is purely random. So I guess that means I'm not really a degen...

I do seem to recall that once I may have done a flip to tidy up stacks at the end of the night. But I really don't even care to do that. I prefer to even out my stack for a payout, then donate the odd amounts to the house for hosting the game. I think that's a much better use of those funds.

Have you ever bought a lottery ticket, or a scratchie? Ever played a slot machine? Flipping is way better odds, unless you’re flipping against @Highli99 or @MatB

Yeah, I hate that too....

Should I bring the horse race game to tomorrow's game btw?

LOL! Yeah, technically the horse race game is a flip. But at least it lasts longer and has some excitement involved. Given the choice, I'd rather just keep playing poker.

Never bought a scratch off and never played a slot machine. Occasionally buy lotto tickets. Like maybe 4/5 times a year, and less than $10 each time. And I understand that I'm flushing that down the toilet, but when the potential payoff is 10s to 100s of millions, I can live with losing $50 a year.

But if you flip, you can play the lotto with your winnings for free

I am honestly curious though.

Even for those that NEVER do flips - would you say you have more fun at a table of poker players that also are the types to never do flips, or the type that do do flips?

If you had to pick one or the other.

Oh 100% I want the flippers at my table. Nobody wants a boring table full of nits.

See the nits want us to do the dirty work, then reap the results. You gotta give action to get action.
Aw man. I think if you asked anybody who’s played with me in the past few years, they’d tell you I’m not a nit. At least I hope so.

But that’s sort of the point of this thread - you can be a player who gives action, who’s never afraid to punt off a buyin, etc whatever, who doesn’t like flips.

Honestly, I'm ok with flipping for a couple bucks at a home game with friends. But the flipping I saw at the casino where the house takes 10% just to run the hand isn't even really neutral EV, you'll win one out of ten times but only get 9 times the risk back. I'll make some speculative calls and give action, but that kind of setup just feels like a waste.

And yeah, I play the lotto sometimes. But only when the payout is high enough it's less of a -EV bet and the extreme gap between risk and reward size means even if it's a mathematically unsound bet (which it usually is) it's worth it just for the short sweat. In the end I'm out $10 for a few tickets.

I don't really like flips but at $2 a pop (similar to a lotto ticket) at a home game amongst friends I'd be willing to do a few, especially if it kept the game loose and splashy when we were actually playing. Or I knew it'd make some of my friends happy, that's worth a couple bones. Willing to admit a lot of my initial reaction/dislike of flips is rooted in my experience at the casino. Still don't think it'll ever be something I seek out myself though.

I figured that would be the answer for some no doubt. I'm curious how many, if any, would go the other direction though?

I also think that a never flipper would still go for flips at the right game with the right crew ;)

(also, I don't think I'm a huge flipper at home games. I'll do it if it's being done, but I generally won't push for one)

Nope, unpossible

I love flips because:

A) I love action
B) it tilts the tight players because the hard earned money they worked for can be gone in an instant
C) the loose crazy players who love to gamble are going to lose it back anyway
D) I love action
E) it makes the general environment more gambly

I know plenty of guys who hate flips. I generally don’t invite them when we play.

(That’s not a dig at those players, we just want a gambly action environment)

If you ever shoved all in with 45-50% equity ……. You are flipping.

I love a “gambly action environment” …… just sayin.

Amen!!!

And clubs are statistically the easiest flushes to hit
One day at the casino someone looked me dead in the eye and told me clubs are the HARDEST flushes to hit because they use more ink and thus settle to the bottom of the deck while shuffling. Truly an outstanding degenerate. He should get an award. A Degenny.
