I mean there's nothing wrong with eating a hot dog in a wrap or a flatbread, if that's how you like it. But suggesting that's superior to a fluffy white bun is insane.

I'm actually kinda surprised no one has made the point that a hot dog is actually just the meat part. The sandwich / not-sandwich debate is easily settled once you realize the bread part is not included.

What OP calls a "hot dog" is a "hot dog in a bun" but the name has been shortened.

Yes, but clearly they are drunk with their own power and cannot be trusted.

I voted no. If you can tag on the word "sandwich" to a food item's name without it sounding ridiculous, it's a sandwich. If not, it's not.

Similarly if you can tag on the word "sandwich" and it doesn't change your mental picture of the food item, it's a sandwich.

submarine = submarine sandwich: YES
hoagie = hoagie sandwich ... a little awkward perhaps, but not ridiculous, therefore: YES
Reuben = Reuben sandwich: YES

hamburger ... hamburger sandwich: NO. A hamburger sandwich is a patty between two slices of actual bread. If it's on a bun, it's just a hamburger.
hot dog ... hot dog sandwich: NO. A hot dog sandwich is a wiener/frankfurter/sausage/hot dog SLICED IN HALF LENGTHWISE and arranged on a slice of real bread.

You've demonstrated the obvious flaw in this rule. Hamburgers are sandwiches. There is no rational definition of sandwich which would exclude hamburgers.

I disagree. A hamburger is not a sandwich either -- it's a hamburger. If you add the word sandwich, it's not redundant. It's now describing a different food item.

Uh, you forgot to highlight "split roll." And don't you wish you checked the definition of "bun" first :

Definition of bun

1: a sweet or plain small bread; especially : a round roll​

Hence, a bun is a roll and a roll is a bun, and thus it is a sandwich.
