Best number of players for Texas Hold Em (1 Viewer)

6-8 players for NLHE in my opinion. 6 if everyone likes playing cards. 8 is better for sitting around and chatting because hands will be a little slower and people will play fewer hands.

Blinds depends. 5c/10c to 25c/25c will all work at a $20 buy in, but with no re-buys I'd say 5c/10c is better as people (theoretically) should stay in longer. If you want to make sure no one is out too early but also keep $20 as the upper limit, I'd say play 5c/10c and encourage a $10 buy in with a $10 re-buy for players who bust.

That’s a great idea!

I think it ultimately depends on the people, if you’re playing with a bunch of nits, any number is not going to be fun.

But if I had to choose, I think 8 players on a round table is perfect for NLHE!

I agree that 8 is the number. 10 is ok if you have a dedicated dealer to manage the game.

Ideal for me is 8. We usually start with 6 and end up with two tables of 9 or 10.

I don't love full tables of ten because they don't allow for five cars circus games.

My home game is currently capped at 11 players. :ROFLMAO:

I am lucky enough to have a fairly large player pool and they are all itching to play every month, but I only have room in my house for a single table. We used to cap at 10, but we tried 11 a few months ago just to accommodate a player that showed up when he wasn't supposed to, and we all decided it wasn't "that bad" so it is now 11 players pretty much every game.

We do have 2 players who always leave at 11pm (we break at 1am), and there's inevitably a player or two who bust out semi-early, so it really isn't that bad. :)

Thinking the number might be different for cash vs tournament games
Eight is the best, both ways. Nine is playable, Ten gets crowded. But obviously in a tournament, you need to learn to play shorthanded too. At least you hope you need to :).

8 > 7 > 6 > 9 > 5 > 10

That’s what I’m thinking. With a $20 buy in you think .10/.20, .25/.50, or .25/.25 blinds? Maybe a 4 bet limit, or pot limit?
I would do 10c-20c or 10c-25c at the most. (or 25c-25c is an option if you want to forgo nickels/dimes)

You could even consider doing the blinds as low as 5c-10c at this stake so it plays "deeper" in terms of big blinds. $20 would buy 200 BB in a 5c-10c game and only 100 BB in a 10c-20c game. The deeper the game is the fewer all ins there would be.

Be curious what your motivation would be for setting limits? A set number of bets plays more like fixed limit (meaning all bets and raises are in a specific increment) and wouldn't apply well to big-bet (meaning pot-limit or no-limit) games.

Pot limit is a different game than no-limit to be sure, and does require counting pots on occasion. Might be confusing to new players, but certainly doable.

I will tell that 10 isn’t the right number  :ROFLMAO:
10 is tolerable only because it's less hassle than splitting the room into two tables of 5. (Though I think I would personally prefer a 5-handed game to a 10-handed one.) 11 is not tolerable and would force you to split into two games, one of 6 and one of 5.

8 is the right number for sure…maybe 9 if you had to, but, hell no to 10!

Cash game, between 6-8. I typically have 8, but will cancel the game if less than 6 can make it. I have 8 regulars with 4 on the spare list, so the game seldom gets canceled except if it's a snow storm. We play dealer choice between Holdem, Pineapple, and Omaha.

I like to start a cash game with 8–9 because if a couple players bust and bounce you still have 6–7.
