Best way to handle food costs (3 Viewers)

To not have food or soda. BYOB. Extras are up for grabs the next week.

We started doing dinner before we play. Our games are generally the same guys and we're all friends as well so the winner has been paying for dinner the next game. The past game we had 8 orders of this spicy Vietnamese beef broth noodle soup and 10 Vietnamese sandwiches

I'll provide chips/pretzels and pop/coffee/water for free. Anything else is up to the player. Our games last 3-4 hrs .

Bringing this thread back to life because I have had this topic on the brain for a while.

When I first started hosting, I kept it simple by providing pretzels and whoppers (a surprisingly good combination FWIW). That slowly grew into pizza, drinks, more snacks, etc. We now have a dinner/social hour before cards kick off and at some of the regular’s recommendation, raised the suggested $5 for pizza up to $10. As my friend said, “Five bucks is the new ten bucks.”

I am very grateful to have a group of regulars that appreciate what I am trying to do and want to contribute to make the night better. One of my buddies played for the first time with us recently and chipped in a $20 for food. Here’s the best part, after winning big for the night, he said he enjoyed the game so much that he gave $50 to help make the game better somehow. I used the money to pay for a mini fridge so now I can stock it with other drinks that don’t fit in the Coke machine. I am fortunate to know some good people!

This currently is by far my fav poker meal. Beats out even the all out steak dinners for me. Just so damn tasty, easy, clean, light, etc. Sober, not sober, dinner, 2 am, or car ride home - these just fit every scenario.
They are definitely good for before poker and right after poker lol.

Some nights I've made balduk noodles for the handful of folks who remain. If I have any left over sautéed meat from dinner they go in there too!

That's awesome! Having a small beverage cooler in the poker room is a game changer. I used to bring a yeti cooler in there but in the past few months I added a small beverage cooler. It's enough to put about a couple dozen bottles of water and a couple dozen beer cans with still some room for some sodas.

I posted about this elsewhere recently, but will say it again for this thread:

* Original method: Ask players to consider donating toward the food/drink costs. (Mine run as much as $150/game, more than $3K per year.) Problem was that some players were very generous, some were average, and some were ridiculously cheap or forgot altogether.

* Second method: By mutual agreement, we set aside 4BB out of any pot of 40BB or larger, until the grub and booze were paid for. This worked pretty well for a long time. Players kind of liked it because the night’s winners were carrying most of that night’s costs, and no one complains when scooping a giant pot… Problem was that it felt rake-y.

* Current method: We play 5BB/player double board bomb pots at random intervals, whenever the previous flop was monotone. Tends to happen every 40-60 minutes or so, sometimes more sometimes less. From these we set aside one entry per bomb pot for the food. Kicker is that the bombers are voluntary—anyone can sit out. So if someone doesn’t want to participate, they don’t have to chip in. Once we hit the food number any further bomb pots run normally.

So far this new method is working well. Only one curmudgeon sat all the bomb pots out one night, and she hasn’t been back. Not missed TBH.

That's dangerous with how spicy they are! You run the risk of people destroying your toilet.
