This is my first post after joining 5 minutes ago so I'll try to make it interesting.

I have no idea how to play Poker but over the years I've accidentally caught poker games on TV while channel-surfing. Although I've never had any real interest in playing, I watched the games as a challenge to try and figure out the rules.

"If you have no interest in poker then WTF are you doing here?" is probably your question at this point.

Just last month I was invited to a dinner party and the host offered everyone a game of poker afterwards so I thought sure, why not? It'll be a new experience for me to actually play a game for once. The host was using real dollar bills and quarters as chips which I thought was funny. Seeing that I was a complete novice, the host explained the basic rules (some of which I figured out on my own over the years) and the four of us played a few games. It was fun.

I decided to buy the host some poker chips, which are just pieces of cheap colored plastic, right? I mean what else is there to know? They're all pretty much the same, right? So I went to Amazon to buy a set and was surprised by the variety. To become more informed, I went on YouTube and quickly found HobbyPhilic's videos, at which point I discovered just how deep this poker chip rabbit hole goes. Holy Jesus! ABS metal slug Monte Carlos, Ceramic Tiki Kings, Milano China Clays, Top Hat and Cane, etc.

Now here's the part that makes no sense at all: After binge-watching hours of poker chip videos, for some irrational reason I really wanted to buy a set of 500 Paulson Top Hat and Cane. It's not like I was going to use them; I just wanted to have them. And of course, come to find out they don't make them anymore. Bummer. Next best thing? Either used casino chips or Classic Poker Chips dot com. Went there and found a link to a YouTube video of Adam Savage's poker chip set from Rounders. Rounders? What's that? Oh it's a movie about guys playing poker and apparently it's quite popular in the poker community, so I watched it. "Gimme 3 stacks of high society!" :-D

Anyway, to make a long story short I wound up buying 500 Rounders and 600 Atlantic Club chips and I have no idea what I'm gonna do with them. Also got a Versa Games birdcage for the Atlantics and a Versa Games flat case for the Rounders.

Story:

When I moved to a small rural city, there was this little dive bar called Harold’s Lounge. It was located in a one-story cinder block building, and looked pretty run down, and though I usually like such places, I had a lot to do setting up my new home, so it was a few months before I stopped in to check it out.

Harold turned out to be an older African-American man with a deep, gravelly voice. At 4 pm I was the only customer. I ordered a Bud in a bottle and there was a long silence.

Finally Harold spoke up.

HAROLD: “New in town?”​

ME: “Yup.”​

HAROLD: “Mind if I ask you a couple questions?”​

ME: “Sure, go right ahead…”​

HAROLD: “Did you drink the water?”​

ME [worried]: “Yeah, I did.”​

HAROLD: “Did you sleep with a local girl?”​

ME: “Um… yeah. I did that too.”​

HAROLD: “So it’s too late. You’ll never get out of this place.”​

That can definitely be an indicator if the chips are intended to be used for cash or tournament but often times casino cash chips will be repurposed for tournament use by PCFers.

The big determining factor is usually the breakdown as a cash set will be optimized for specific blinds which do not change versus a tournament set which will usually include more denominations with similar amounts of each denom (e.g. cash set with 100 x $0.25, 200 x $1, 300 x $5, 60 x $25 / tournament set with 120 x T25, 120 x T100, 60 x T500, 100 x T1k, etc).

I'm in a 1-bedroom apt so I doubt a bonafide poker table is in my near future but I do have some nice red felt, will upload pics when the chips arrive.

I wasn't thinking that far ahead. I bought custom amounts of each chip denomination because I thought they looked cool, I wasn't planning on actually using them for game play.

CPCs are awesome, I hope you went with CSQ over Scroll mold... but both are nice. If you get a chance grab a sample set of maybe the Indiana Grands and check out some RHCs. By the way Paulson Top Hat & Cane is a general term. We have THC(39mm), RHC(39mm), IHC (43mm), FHC (48mm) also 36mm and no mold 50mm. Then There are different clay manufacturers BCC, TRKing, Burt Co, C&J, ASM (the original CPC) then ceramic, hybrid ceramic, high end plastics... this rabbit hole is very deep! Hope you two sets scratch the itch! Lol

I did consider Indiana Grands but after carefully studying the pictures at Apache Poker Chips I realized some chips would be noticeably more worn out than others so the whole set would be inconsistent that way. I wanted a brand new mint-condition set of as-close-to-casino-quality-as-possible chips and CPC seemed like the only game in town so I went with them.

Again absolutely nothing wrong with CPCs, and you are correct that the chips Apache is selling are used, but there are others out there.

You will soon find out that dead mint are not very fun to play with, shuffle the crap out of your new CPCs, they only get better the more they get broken in!

Don’t be alarmed when they arrive if the colors look washed out and dusty. That’s just the manufacturing.
A tiny amount of mineral oil on a soft cloth, wiped on the outer edge, and then wipe it all off while doing the face, and the colors will truly pop.

A couple days ago I saw HobbyPhilic's video "Should you oil your poker chips?" where he did a side-by-side comparison so I checked if my local Target sold mineral oil and they do, gonna pick some up. Thanks for the photos, will post my own when I can.

Yeah bro I have no explanation for you other than your afflicted. But you’ll find the longer you spend here the more spending $10/chip or $300/chip sounds reasonable. 1st day here I was saying, “$3/chip what freakos!!! Who spends $3 for a chip??!!!!?!?!? Yeah now 3 years later I’ve got $300 singles and sets with an average price per chip over $3 per chip. Stick to what you’ve got love them enjoy them and play them. They’re poker chips so at least for me they’re meant to be played not to be observed. Nothing is better than spending years on a project and then putting it in play. Stick around and you’ll meet people from all walks of life who do all kinds of things. We just enjoy the same hobby. Oh, you should go to meetups to of you can. I’m hoping to make it to one this year!

The chips arrived Friday and I lightly dabbed them with some mineral oil, and the colors popped just like in your photos. Nice!

@bryceguy you got this bug in a bad way. Probably the worst I’ve seen.

My first order was straight to CPC as well! I first purchased a 700 set of Stock Rounders and I own them still. I was only around for a month before my budget went from $.10/chip to $10/chip.
