I wasn't sure where to put this little rant, so I'm putting it here. Yes, it's about the boat chips, but bear with me. I'm not trying to rehash arguments that have been beaten to death.
I have no problem with there being secret and limited group buys to get these chips produced. I applaud the effort I have no problem with the original purchasers selling them at a nice profit. But here's my problem. These chips are being actively traded, and have been for a while. But they are still being retained for the most part within a select group. Now that the secret is out, why can't the full membership participate in the secondary market? Can the GB members please remove the covenant to only resell to other GB members?
Failure to give the full membership access to the secondary market will only serve to make the division within the community permanent. That's my two cents.
I know others have responded to your post. Hopefully most of your questions were answered.. but to give a tad more context of why folks are hesitant to sell publically.... a while back, a member approached me, and commented about this very issue. He’s a serious collector, rarely sells, but has on occasion sold off chips. He mostly buys chips. He explained that he had a few racks he didn’t really need, and observed that some of the frustration he noticed being expressed from non participants was similar to your op. He was considering selling his extras making them available to the community. He asked about a fair price to offer...
...meanwhile, there was a thread over on the donkey den, which was was discussing prices observed for the Star chips. The first couple posts seemed to observe outrageous pricing of $7/chip, and it was discussed (and commonly agreed upon) that folks would be totally cool with these chips selling in the $3-4/ chip range.
Back to my seller... he listed his chips for just over his actual costs, and they wound up selling between $2-3/chip. He didn’t need to sell them, but did, and well below the “acceptable price”. Well, fast forward back to that donkey thread on pricing... this member was excoriated and demeaned for selling his chips... the reason? Well, his post count was only in the 50 Range... so folks has to judge the validity of him as a chipper... They blasted him, and even speculated on the status of his marriage as a reason he was selling...Huh?
We all participate in different ways.. some have 2000 posts in 6 months, and only one set of
CC chips. Others, like this member, are very active in collecting over several years, but are very private in what they post online. This member has an insane custom Chan table, has participated in several CHIP Room sales, has tons of sweet Paulson chips, but he was belittled as some random neighbor of mine (he happens to live within a mile of me...).
I had the conversations with this member, I know what his intentions were. He didn’t need to sell, and he didn’t need to start the auctions out around his cost. He was trying to be responsive to the complaints he was hearing, and tried to free up some chips... they sold for VERY reasonable amounts, and he still got flamed on the donkey den... by the same people who said “if only someone would sell these for $3-4/chip”... who the eff wants to participate under these circumstances...
Some people just want to be unhappy...
