Hi All, i'm new on pokerchipforum although i've been on chiptalk.net since 2006. I still post sometimes over there, so not strictly a refugee, but your community seems alot more active. i live in the UK so quality chips are hard to come by and postage/custom charges make it quite difficult. The first decent set i owned was a nice set of BPC Modern Clays, which i sadly sold a few years ago. I currently own a few sample sets and a nice 300 set of PNY's which are very rare over here. thanks for stopping by...

Welcome to where the action is.

Welcome, fellow Brit. Well, I'm just an expat. :ROFLMAO:

Quality chips are tough to come by, here in the UK. Even my local casino's chips are rubbish metal insert tourney chips, and oversized rubbery cash chips. (n)

Welcome aboard. Enjoy all the great information and good people on this site!

Yep. I'm beginning to think when I imported my CPS set, the total value of UK chips went up by 89%

Anyhow Chris welcome to the site... might be able to get a UK union going soon...

Welcome!! Very cool that you have PNY chips, I bet they are a conversation piece.

So question for you a guys: I have heard more than a few times how hard it is to get nice chips over there, why is that? seems like in the year 2016 it shouldn't be that hard, but I'm sure I'm missing something. I'm not specifically talking about individuals, but it would seem that a casino at the very least would be able to get a hold of Paulson or CPC and get the goods. Shitty that they are so hard to get, but I bet it makes owning a set like the PNYs all that much better!!

Anyway, welcome again!

Obviously I'm not from the UK, but from what I gather it's these things:
  • High cost of international shipping
  • High import taxes
  • USA is the capital of clay chip production

The sets that are already in the UK are typically gonna be owned by collectors that know their value, and buying foreign owned chips incurs an instant shipping+tax penalty which probably prices out some would-be owners.

Not so much they are hard to get, just that they are hard to get anywhere near 'market rate'.

Welcome to PCF :)

Just to add to that, the import tax is a killer. Add 20% to the cost of the chips plus the shipping? Thanks!

And then there's the factor that hasn't been mentioned. You live in the UK, you import chips from the US. You know there isn't a demand for them in the UK, so when you want to sell them on, you know you'll be selling them cheap because a) nobody wants them where you live and b) the largest potential market, the US, also has the largest number of sellers, and they won't have to pay huge shipping costs if they buy internally.

So... buying them screws you, but selling them also screws you, which kinda puts you off.

Now that's just my opinion, of course, but it makes sense to me.

EDIT: the above applies less to genuine collectors pieces, as these will be sought after wherever they are by genuine collectors. But for anything better than dice chips, I think it holds true.

I'm disappointed that the UK doesn't have their own manufacturers and suppliers, for custom poker chips, being that gambling is huge, and 100% legal. I mean, people gamble on anything here, as there are betting agencies in every local village, and adverts all over the 'telly'. To be fair, the poker league chips I have from the UK (Redtooth), are far better chip quality, than that of Grosvenor Casinos - one of the largest Casino conglomerates in the UK, which offer super heavy, unwashed 14-15g metal insert tournament chips, and these rubbery child-proof-like cash table chips. You can literally bounce them off the felt! (n)
