Hi all,

Very curious to hear some interesting things you guys do/did in college when it comes to hosting poker nights. Extremely new to hosting in general but would be interested to hear any/all tips you may have regarding this.

I’d just make sure you take your group into consideration picking your stakes. When I was in college none of us had much money, and none of my friends felt confident enough playing poker for much money - so we just played .01/.02 lol. $2 max buy in! You want to make sure nobody is risking more than they’re comfortable losing.

And every now and then we’d pitch in for pizza.

Have big tournaments where it’s all day drinking and poker !!! Start early like 2pm. You’re young all you guys got is time take advantage ! lol

$20 tourneys. Whoever deals for the group gets a free entry.
And if you're too broke for that, $5 with unlimited rebuys. Everyone has a shot!

Have a poker game but have a TV showing a game or a fight too, UFC stream or NBA or whatever you want. Order a few pizzas and play for cheap, getting people used to the rotation and rhythm of the game. You'll realize soon who actually wants to play and take it serious vs those that just want to splash around for 45 mins at a pregame. Neither is wrong, but very different games. Read the room.

Holidays are the best for it, have a game while everyone's on campus without anything the next day. Friday before a football game or something. Get creative.

Be stricter about the rules to start, not penalizing or killing hands but just being clear who bets when. Much much easier for people to learn the order of events versus trying to reel it in once it gets crazy after the Kraken bottle has made an appearance. Whoever's dealing/hosting should be playing but also be the floor for beginner games.

One of my tournaments got busted by the 2nd shift building security team that worked for the university. I had I think 3 or 4 full tables (small stakes tournament), had permission from the professor to use the common room and it was only members of the university poker club (so private and completely legal).

The security team had a bit of a mall cop complex and thought they had busted an illegal racket, 2 came in with their shift supervisor for the campus, I even showed them the email the Prof responded to giving permission. Anyways, was pretty frustrating, fortunately we were close to a final table and ended the cash games and finished the tournie crammed in someone’s dorm room.

That was the only real negative or at least that I remember. So if you’re going to be more visible with larger games, worth making sure you’ve got the right approvals / permission to use the space and hopefully avoid having issues.

GL!

Make sure your shots are water while theirs are vodka.

Kidding of course!

I second what everyone else said, but I will say adding some extras to the game turned ours up a very fun notch, like 7-2 game and small bomb pots. I feel like everyone latched on cause it kept people looking forward to something and awake/lively. I wish I had done that way back when.
