No, I have no idea your reasons, which is why I asked (especially since you already dismissed security, which would have been my first guess).
For me personally, not offering samples of my own custom work would fall into the categories I described. Simply wondering what your reasons were. Curious, is all, no malice.
Okay, cool, glad I asked before responding... I respect those are the reasons you wouldn't offer samples but those are not my reasons at all...
I omitted my thought process on purpose since I didn't want to go against the practice of 95%+ of custom set owners of offering samples... I think that's a big and great tradition of the forum and didn't want to hinder future sample offerings by explaining my reasons... In hindsight, I should have said only 'unfortunately no samples' rather than 'don't feel good offering samples' as to not start the discussion, oh well...
Security is not a concern of mine at all... I have many sets which single chips are somewhat readily available on
eBay and having just one set of many secured didn't even cross my mind... I will continue to use other sets as I and my players love the experience of playing with different and unexpected sets... If I had concerns about the honesty of my players, they wouldn't be playing here in the first place (I might be proven totally wrong in the future, IDK)... Regarding the amount of work to ship all the samples, I 'think' I would have fun doing it... I say I 'think' because I have never done this much shipping... I offered many times to re-ship group buys and non-american sample sets but was never taken on that... It is definetelly not about selfishness either... If someone wanted to build a playable set just like a custom I had designed, I would certainly be honored and give permission... Just to keep with tradition, I even considered creating one chip exclusively to give away as a sample... Sort of in the same vain as
@PatTheCat with his tiger chips, although he did offer samples of his other chips as well...
My reasons are much simpler and at the same time, more exoteric and totally silly... I'm sure lots of people will LOL at it, which is fine... In my mind, those chips were created to see action on the felt, that's their reason for being... I want to use them and honor them... I want them one day to have round edges and nicks, I want them to tell stories about money won and lost, about the fun had on the tables... Taken chips away from their purpose doesn't seem fair to "me"...
Also, differently than some people who created almost 'fantasy theme' sets (one day I'll also do the same!), the sets I created are EXTREMELY personal to me... One has to do with the person I love the most in my life, my younger brother, who lives 6,000 miles away from me and the others have to do with the "non-person" I love the most in my life, my bulldog Bubbles... Those were made to honor them and to always have them in my mind, even after they are gone... Having people who never met me, my brother or Bubbles with those chips, for some reason, didn't feel 100% right to me... Nothing to do with selfishness...
My apologies to the collectors... I've seen some awesome sample collections (
@Jeff 's come to mind for example) and although I would be honored to have my chips as part of those collections, I also have to respect what I think it's right 'to me'...
