COVID and live poker, again (3 Viewers)

Welcome to PCF. Sign up for the special "Bergs and Kifer" offer and we come to your house and eat everything in your fridge while ruining a dinner party.
Or, sign up for the "Kifer Only" offer where you get to play poker in a garage all weekend while pissing in the corner and getting really drunk.

10/10 would do again.

And again: You’re most likely to be highly contagious before you know you are sick. Which is why I am thinking about playing less, being even more selective about where I play, and using the highest-quality mask available.
Like everything else in life, it's all about risk vs. reward.

Ultimately, only you can decide whether playing less and reducing your exposure to COVID/flu/flaming rabies is worth the peace of mind it will bring you. You already know what you can do to reduce risk - you just have to decide what you are and aren't willing to do.

Dammit, the bacon.

I'm not going off of vibes, either. I'm going off of real-life observations. COVID isn't a big deal anymore. Not where I live, anyway. People aren't afraid anymore. In fact, people feel stupid for being so afraid in the first place. We prefer to live our lives. If that means I'm "taking things more casually" than you would like, well, that's on you. Not me. I will continue to go out in public places and not be afraid.

When you say “living our lives,” that includes “giving other people our illnesses because we don’t give a shit about anyone else.”

I’m sensing here the attitude of a teenager who thinks seat belts are stupid and driving 90 mph is cool. Then crashes into someone’s grandmother.

These are the people showing up at the casino even though they know they are sick.

Blame it on that damn gain of function (which is, but isn’t there) - lol.

Gain of function in the virus itself is a distinct phenomenon from the cumulative (and potentially exponential) impact of going through the same illness repeatedly.

It’s kind of like repeatedly forgetting to put oil in your car. The cause of the problem is the same every time (no oil), but the number and severity of issues the car develops will keep getting worse until it fails completely.

(Gain of function by contrast would be if your motor oil progressively got thicker and thicker. Or in this example I guess thinner and thinner.)

I have posted multiple times in this thread, if you are sick, stay home. If you are hosting and you’re sick, cancel. Just because you choose not to read it, doesn’t mean I “don’t give a shit about anyone.”

For someone who is presumably a good poker player, I would think that you would be able to make well thought-out calculated risks. Which is what you are doing any time you go into crowds. You might catch a cold because someone who wasn’t showing any symptoms dared to also go out in public. The horror! Me? I’ll live my life. Which means not living in fear.

I’ve been reading everything. It’s just that you keep going back to highly simplistic slogans and crude thinking about a tricky topic.

For, example, this “living in fear” idea is some macho b.s.

When you budget for your household, do you call it “living in fear of going broke”? No, you’re managing your finances. Like a responsible adult.

If you go on diet, are you “living in fear of being fat”? No, you’re managing your weight. Because it’s good for your health.

Bellowing these slogans suggests to me that maybe you are the fearful one: So afraid that you’ll look weak that you need to act tough.

I laugh that people who prefer to not get sick are "living in fear". Always the extremes these days.
If you can share the magic spell that keeps people from ever getting sick, please do. Not living in fear simply means, I know that at some point I will catch some random virus and get sick. But I’m not going to worry about it. And I’m certainly not going to try to get other people to live in a certain way just to appease me.

This is an example of arguing only the most extreme options.

No one realistically thinks you can ever avoid every problem 100% of the time.

Instead, people can make choices and take reasonable precautions to reduce risks.

But that’s living in fear, see.

not what I am saying.

It's not fear to take precautions. If you want to wear a mask full time, that's not fear -- its a preference. If you avoid certain things, its preference, not fear. You are reducing risks, not living in fear.

I go out and do my thing .. not because I am not living in fear, but because its my choice and I'm aware of my risks. I'll enjoy concerts, crowds, poker nights .. and I'm fine with that. Yeah, I could get sick, and I understand my risks. Associating not wanting to get sick with living in fear is stupid, and extreme.

At the risk of sounding too “macho” for your taste, your personal dilemma about playing live poker seems to have a very simple answer. You need to play less to reduce your exposure (although any exposure could be the one that gets you sick), or stop playing live poker altogether. But this doesn’t eliminate the risk of just going out to dinner and being exposed to a virus. Or checking out at a cash register. Or being in a meeting at work. Unless you decide to live off the grid in the woods, you will be at risk every single day.

Personally? I will continue to go outside. And I am hosting a game tonight. I’ll let you know if I make it.

We’ll just have to disagree on that one. Wearing a mask, on some level, is fear of catching a virus.

No one wants to get sick, obviously. But at some point, everyone does get sick.

You cannot avoid things in life, and getting sick is one of them.

and agreed, we can disagree. Wearing a seatbelt is fear. Following the speed limit is fear, avoiding food that you're highly allergic to is fear. cleaning your house is fear, you cook your chicken because of fear ... You can relate everything you do as a response to fear. See .. you live in fear. If not, pop in your car, drive as fast as your car will allow to the grocery store, get some raw chicken, don't pay for it, and eat it in the parking lot. If you can't do that, you're living in fear.

I'm just saying not everything we do is because we are afraid of it .. we do things to avoid situations that have bad outcomes because we're smart, not because we're afraid.

Wearing a seatbelt is fear of crashing.
Checking the turn is fear of the river.
(Actually, kinda get this one)
Buying insurance is fear of dying.
Buying gas is fear of being stranded.
Budgeting is fear of busto.
Getting a haircut is fear of being shaggy
Changing underwear is fear of being crusty
Sitting on the bowl is fear of shitting uourself

I rather like this. We’re all motivated by fear. Actually explains a lot.

You’re exactly right. Fear is a very important force. Courage is the ability to face fears and act. Ignoring fear is not bravery, it’s dumb.

if you’re scared of rivers, you probably suffer from potomaphobia and should seek therapy.

Which usually occurs over decades or longer…..or….magically much quicker.

I’m no virologist (and I suppose we’re straying off topic a bit) but if the virus was released from a lab, isn’t it possible that it has been genetically altered or engineered, such that it behaves differently from typical viruses?

Yup!
