I tend to disagree...
Onions belong cooked down into the sauce. Pizzarias cannot do it because of their "one sauce for all pizzas" concept, but like a spaghetti sauce, if you want onions, garlic, red pepper flakes, or really any spice*, you cook it into the sauce, you dont add it on late.
*notable exception being basil, which loses its flavor quickly when heated, so it should only be added to the pizza as a topping.
I love cooking them down in the sauces. For me. One of my absolute favorite pizza toppings is long, thinly sliced red onions. Damn..............Now I want pizza!!! And now that I have trained my palate to enjoy mushrooms. That is another favorite topping of mine
