In my vast 5 month experience of upgrading my chips and cards, I've noticed a few things. For now, let's just talk wear and tear on chips. Keep in mind, I'm not a collector. I really just want a couple nice sets to play cash games and maybe a tournament set.

I really like my Terribles, which I bought nearly mint. The .50 are pink and after only a couple games, they seem to be getting dirty already. I also notice a decent flea bite on one, which I can't swear wasn't there, but I've got a pretty keen eye (my dad referred to it as a calibrated eyes) and would have noticed that bite. Is the dirt color related? So, is it just more noticeable on the pink? Or is there something about this type of material that's more prone to dirt, vs say the Majestics?

Also, I'm not sure if I'm a fan of sharp edges or not. I initially liked the idea of mint, but honestly, I think I like the edges on my Majestics better. I know the Terrible edges will wear, but will they wear evenly? Will there be discoloration with those edges?

What about the Majestics, how will they wear?

What about CPC, since a custom set seem to be my ultimate goal? How will they wear?

I'm not against normal wear at all. Just wondering what the characteristics of wear are for each type of chip material I guess.

Are they terribles st. joes?
I have the $1's in my mixed set. They were pretty minty, but I had a short stack I was shuffling, and noticed some with some coffee looking stains on them. They cleaned up nice. The stains reappeared almost immediately, BUT I HADN'T SPILLED ANY COFFEE! I put two and two together and realized it was color transfer from the dark brown spots on the ones. Could that be the dirt color you're talking about?

i particularly like mint paulsons because it's like buying a new car. you're the first owner and you know it hasnt been messed with and won't need any sort of maintenance (cleaning, oiling, etc) for quite some time. You're the one to break it in and take care of it from the start. unlike a used car, you dont know where they've been or how much the previous owner messed with it.

Once chips become well used (rounded, won't stand on edge), there's no turning them back. But once mint chips are broken in, they'll stay that way for many years and only get better.

CPC are a harder material and don't wear as quickly as Paulsons, but both are great and should wear evenly. I'm not sure about the majestics.

Do you oil your chips? When I was new to chipping, I purchased a sample set of Paulson Classics and decided not to purchase them because they looked dirty after I shuffled them a few times. I thought, " wow, these chips suck for that kind of money." Little did I know I should have bought 100 sets at that time:confused:

Not trying to start a debate because I know this can be a point of contention, but now I oil my chips and it significant reduces the color transfer and keeps my chips looking new for much longer. Especially the pinks and whites.

I noticed on my older table that DOES not have Speed cloth or gaming suede (it is something like gaming suede) my cards and chips (white Paulson NYNY $1's and Pink Paulson Empress $2.50 chips were getting dirty, when I built my next table with speed cloth it did not seem to get any dirtier, and a new set up of cards have not yet gotten dirty at all...

Check your playing surface.... My CPC custom set does not appear to have any flea bites or have any dirtiness to them..

That's a good point. I had posted a couple months ago about my aging cloth. I've done a wipe down, now again, which seems to help. Man, with the window shade up, you can really see the worn spots. TChan sent me a cloth sample. I hate to say it, but I might just order a boring, non-custom cloth from him. I'm just not sold on the custom cloth logo yet. They look great when i see them and I'm sure there's no functional issues with them. But on my octagon table, I don't know, I just think the plain burgundy is tough to beat.

IF you are going the custom rout, I would look into getting something on it. If you need help with the graphic I can help or you could ask p5woody, of j5, and I know there are some others around here that can help.

That's great. Yes, I have a jpeg. I'd like to see what it looks like on various backgrounds. So black, white, etc. Sometimes I like white of my Terribles, sometimes the Majestic black looks sleeker to me.

Not a problem. Black inlay on one side and a white inlay on the other...no upcharge for different inlays on same chip.
