Etiquette as host being the big winner? (1 Viewer)

I don’t think a host needs to play differently just because they are the host.

The etiquette of being a big winner ideally should be the same, too.

If your game involves a lot of razzing, the host can participate in that too in theory… Just have to gauge whether the group also sees it that way, I guess.

And presumably the OP isn’t winning big *every* session, right? So the occasional big win shouldn’t be such an issue.

In my own game really the only thing different for me as a player is that I have to stay to the end no matter what. I can’t leave if I’m running bad or just not feeling it. I could sit out, I suppose, but that would be odd.

This may result in me playing a bit more carefully and conservatively in my own game than in others just because I know I have to stick it out regardless of how I’m running.
One of my coworkers will be the dedicated dealer and not play sometimes. At first it was a little weird but having a dedicated dealer was helpful to keep the pace comfortable. Sitting out shouldn't be difficult as the host. Sometimes the run bad is just too bad.

If I am up as a host or as guest, I will generally agree to any requested flips at the end of the game. At times that means giving back a chunk of winning, but I am happy to give the action and give folks a chance to get unstuck.
I'm gonna have to start a thread.

I think a host should take the Daniel Negreanu approach - no matter what, take new players' fun most seriously. I know when I show up to a new game as a pretty introverted person, having a personable host who takes everyone having a good time seriously helps a ton.

As the OP, I've been reading the responses, and learning a lot. I really appreciate all the sides taken, the suggestions of being graceful and making the new players feel comfortable. As well as rubbing it in the face of regulars or good buddies!! I definitely feel better versed as a host (and player at another home game) in how to take a huge win!! Aces up!

That is true an upbeat host can get the energy in the room going. This is especially true because the host usually has a connection to each players.

Another thing that helps is alcohol … don’t judge

This happened to me this year - made a separate post about it!

I like to think I've been humble about it - until this year, I've never really placed or taken it too seriously, but I upped my game, practiced a lot, and put a lot of time into making sure everyone has a good night either way.

When I started running ahead early on in the year, everyone made it their mission to try and take me down. Made for some very interesting games, and a very, very tense final (I had to come last, and one other player had to come first, for me to lose the winning spot by 1 point).

I'm going to put more effort into taking photos this year so I can participate in this community a bit! Only one of my friends is really into poker, though that might change this year as I've got more people coming.
