Favorite Stock Ceramic Set (2 Viewers)

short answer: get samples.

medium-ish answer: what i like may be different than what you like. and what you like may be different than what BGingGA likes. we all have different tastes and like different things when it comes to chips. that's what makes this place so interesting and fun, imo. some like flashy designs and some like subdued designs. some like real clay chips (asm, paulson, trk, bcc), some like ceramics, some like plastics (matsui, bud jones, etc.) and some like china clays. some like them all. while it's great that you are asking for so many opinions on all these different types of chips, the only opinion that matters is yours. which is why it's best for you to get samples so you can decide for yourself.

As strange as it is to say, I actually think it's more important to get samples of ceramics than clays. I really love all the clay varieties differently and would never be disappointed with any of them, but there are certain ceramics that I really can't stand.

I have an old set that doesn't get brought out anymore by Sunfly that, frankly, I find unusable now. More or less completely frictionless.

Not strange at all IMO.

Did it start out that way? I will admit that the coefficient of friction is pretty low on these. Also what was the set? Maybe I'll buy it ;)

Agree with this. Some people love Sunfly chips..to me, they are just ok. Others like the older Chipco and GOCC chips (I'm in this camp). Still others like PGI and ABC chips.

Bottom line: get samples, figure out what you like, buy chips.

Personally, the only custom ceramics I would be willing to buy would be either GOCCs or PGI's Chipco replicas. The texture of everything else is too slick for me. The only other chip I would consider that is technically ceramic is the Sunfly hybrid which is a very cool alternative to traditional ceramics and can be had through CPC (and I'm sure other vendors, but I would go through CPC).

Old customs titled Tom's Poker Room. Unless your user name is a strange way to say Tom doubt you'd want them. [emoji38]

I dunno if they were made by PGI or GOCC, but Tommy's PCF Tournament chips are the most grippy ceramics I've ever handled, and it's not even close. No glossy edges, either.

Also seriously considering the Sun-Fly hybrid chips for an upcoming project. I like that they are available in larger diameters for upper denominations, too.

You sure? I thought the orange set chips were PGI, and these were GOCC.....

A number of months ago I asked Tommy who produced the PCF tourney chips because I was hoping to use that same manufacturer for the Extra Life tourney chips. He told me PGI.

Yep, went back and researched. He looked into both as sources, but PGI produced them.

Guess I am going to have to change my legal name all in the name of chipdom.

Ok, I have a conundrum and could use some help from people that have bought either or both of these ceramics before:

I love all the options that BR Pro Poker has and the fact that they can give me custom denominations, but I think the feel of the Venerati chips are superior even though they are far less money (.39 versus .70 a piece).

Anyone have experience with both of these?

What other vendor will have ceramics that feel closer to the SidePot Venerati side of the spectrum versus the Sun-Fly shiny edge slippery spectrum???

EDiT: I hate the $1 chip. Everything else is beautiful.

I've ordered semi-customs from BR-Pro (300-chip and 400-chip sets as wedding/anniversary presents) and previously owned a 1000-chip tournament set of Venerati chips from Sidepot. I'd rate them about the same in terms of feel/play, but it's pretty hard to argue with 39c/chip, if you like 'em. I think it's one of the best value chips on the market.

PGI's chipco blanks produce some very fine custom chips (re: Tommy's PCF Tournament set, for example). They exhibit a lot of grip, with non-shiny rolling edges.

I notice a distinct difference in the shininess of the edges (less with the Venerati) and also the higher coefficient of friction (higher with the Venerati) which are two things I really love.

Downside is that the $1 is terrible and I can't get a 5c or 10c chip. Basically want to build a micro cash set of 500 chips but can't with Venerati :(

I have samples of the followng in front of me

- Chipco produced Royal Yak Chips
- PGI-produced Royal Yak Chips
- PGI-produced PCF Tourney and Deja Vu Tourney Chips. These
- GOCC Nine Dragons
- SunFly Seaside Chips (BR Pro)
- SunFly Lucid Diamond (Apollon)
- Venerati (SidePot)
- Unique Poker Tour (ABC Gifts And Awards, I believe)
- Jubilee (ABC Gifts and Awards)

In my estimation

Slipperiness
1) SunFly (Most)
2) ABC
3) SunFly Lucid Diamond
4) Venerati
5) GOCC
6) Chipco / PGI Royal Yak / PGI "Chipco" (Least)

Glossiness of edge
1) SunFly Lucid Diamond (most)
2) Sunfly
3) ABC
4) Venerati
5) GOCC/ Chipco / PGI Royal Yak / PGI "Chipco" (Least)

Roundness of Edge
1) PGI "Chipco"
2) Chipco / PGI Yak / GOCC (I could swear these are the same blank...)
3) Sunfly Lucid Diamond (just seems to be a bit less square than other SunFly chips...might be my eyes, though)
4) SunFly / Venerati
5) ABC

If you want, I'll take some photos of them so that you can compare. Let me know.

Thank you for doing this. Where could I get samples of GOCC. What is GOCC?

Edit: Game on Chip Company, I looked it up.

What sort of stock sets could I get from GOCC?

Game On Chip Company, who are a vendor here (http://www.pokerchipforum.com/forums/gameonchipcompany-com.40/).

My understanding is that when Chipco went under, PGI bought the equipment and some of their inventory (such as the Royal Yak chips). I think the former Chipco employees formed GOCC. In any event, they produce really nice ceramics...just search for "Nine Dragons" in the forum for an idea. I keep flipping between getting a custom GOCC set and a custom CPC set.

As far as getting samples, you pretty much have to get in on one of the group buys, or perhaps they have some left overs (http://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/inventory-clear-out-update.5409/ ... man, that thread did not fare well in the site upgrade...). I'd suggest emailing them (try pcf@gameoncc.com or sales@gameoncc.com).

For stock sets, check the various threads in the forums. They only make them if a set is ordered, though...I don't think they keep samples on hand. Perhaps someone might be willing to sell you a Nine Dragons sample (not me).

Could they make any of the Sun-Fly designs like Mosaics or Sunset?

The Nine Dragon Set from GOCC is pretty boss. I don't know. The Sun Flys I have are slippery to the point of being unplayable. Personally I would never use them.
