But, again, I hadn’t ever heard someone call a standard ceramic print an inlay.

Well, truly, because it's not. There is no intermediary medium between the dye and the ceramic chip body. So none of the words inlay, sticker, or decal (even in their "widest" definition) could ever apply.

@BGinGA called it a "faux inlay" because many people, I'm sure including you and me, have used the dye sublimation printing process to imitate various inlay-style graphics, to the point of shapes, colours, gradients, false shadows, etc. Good colour processes and high print resolution have led us to the point where it can be very difficult to tell printed ceramics from other types of chips upon casual observation or website photos, so we rely on descriptors to give us the truth.

I don't see why we couldn't ask Tina to create a textured "hybrid" chip (with or without the labels) to include the mold as well (I voted E, or B 2nd choice). That would be the best of all worlds in my opinion. I would have gotten a mold with labels if Tina offered it.

+1 That would be awesome. Will there be a 43 mm option?

This is the terminology we prefer to use on PCF because it defines the providence of the chip manufacturing process and material. There are many ways to embed something into something else. We like to be specific because it also allows us to separate original chip from modified chips.

An inlay (to us) will always mean an unmodified compression clay chip (that is not a hot stamp).

A sticker/decal could mean a variety of things:
1) an original label on any injection molded plastic chip, or a ceramic body chip, that has a recess
2) a replacement label on any injection molded plastic chip, or a ceramic body chip, that has a recess
3) a replacement label on any compression clay chip that is applied on top of an original label or hot stamp
4) a replacement label on any compression clay chip that is applied after removal of the original inlay or hot stamp (such as by milling)

If you think this terminology is irrelevant, then I have some news for you. In the modern era, chips aren't actually made of clay or ceramic, yet we still use these terms to separate these different classes of chips. Not different from how we separate inlays from stickers/decals.
I would like to see this section of the PCF rule book

Are you even looking at some of these new people and how long they have been on PCF? I’ll be honest, if I was new and heard the term “inlay” I would just think the middle circle shaped logo part of a poker chip.

People need to stop overanalyzing things. I get wanting to educate someone but sometimes it comes across pretty smug.

Some people are just coming here for fun and want to have some fun chips made.

No rule book. But it should probably be in the Glossary, if not already.

I really hope I didn't come across as rude. I have gone out of my way to keep my written language calm, factual, and non-judgmental. I was once a newbie to the site, and I have appreciated every little bit of education and correction while I learned.

But the lingo is the lingo. We bother with terms such as THC, RHC, IHC, FHC when even GPI just calls them all "Hat and Cane". It's part and parcel of the culture around here.

I get the lingo and I know we joke specifically about the term “inlay” a lot but IMO “inlay” should be the general term for the center part of a chip. I get that “inlays” can be pressed in the chip, stickers, labels, printed on, etc. But “inlay” should be the base term. Again, just my opinion.

Example, when someone is clearly designing a cards mold set I’ve never seen someone ask for help with “the part I’ll have printed on the middle of the chip.” They always ask for help or feedback on the “inlay”.

Dear god, @ChipGuide was right, it’s all going to shit. A fking sticker on a cards mold chip is an inlay now??

Curious to see how it prints inside the recessed lines of the mold. Any pics of printed samples?
this is an early prototype. Will not have any printed samples for a month or so. Once they get the mold done we will have some samples printed and posted

Damn, just make that a hybrid option and lock me in. What an amazing replica of a fantastic mold.
This is the way. I recently got samples of the small crown hybrid chips that @Himewad had made, (See here) And also been looking at the photos of @chipinla Playboy KC hybrids. Link to Steve's thread These chips a a nice improvement on the cards mold. They are on slightly thicker blanks and have a great feel to them, with a cross hatch texture. I think these could be game changers in the inexpensive China ceramic niche.

@justincarothers I'm not clear - which way are you going with the new Greek Key mold? Hybrid with label, or the previous flat chip with printed "inlay" artwork? Any update on the progress?

Hope Steve doesn't mind, but here's a pic from his thread so you can see what I'm talking about.

And here's a close up he sent me showing the texture of the chip and the label.:love::love:
