I play a casual game and would get some bad looks if I took out a pad of paper and started writing during a game. Does anyone use an app to take notes? Is there one you recommend? I have an apple if that matters.

hmm i've never taken notes at the table lol. but i guess your best bet is the Note app from apple.
If anyone even notices you typing they will assume you are texting someone. Note app works fine.
Or a pen and paper - excuse yourself to the restroom and take any notes you need to. For a casual home game? Why? If it's the same cast of characters, it doesn't take but a few games to figure out who is who. Does it?

Over the years I have seen people take various levels of notes. I don't think anyone really cares as I have personally don't care and have never seen anyone say anything to anyone.
Discretion is only needed if you write things like "Fish" "Newb" "Lag Tard" "Fucking moron suck out fuck face" etc... I would stick with a numbering or Alphabet system for those kind of notes.

That's funny - this is what 95% of my Poker Star notes say.

For live players, if I notice them taking notes it indicates that they are taking the game seriously. That doesnt necessarily mean they are good though!
I can see why hiding your note taking would be +ev for your image. What I've tried a couple times is sending myself text messages with the hand history, if anyone glimpses my phone it looks like I'm texting a bud instead of furiously writing "v2 check raises turn 2.7x" in a notes app.

I generally just use my voice-to-text app, and screw being discreet. Most common entry is "@Gobbs is a frickin' donkey, hee-haw."

if on an Apple device definitely just use the Notes app and also from the app store download and install the Poker HH Keyboard (Poker hand history keyboard) app. It'll add a different keyboard for a quick way to write poker short hand notes without switching the keyboard a million times.
