How much money have you spent on chips (playing sets, collections ect.) (1 Viewer)

The sick thing for all the cost is that I don't host very often.

I love how this topic always comes up, no matter the hobby. I have been and continue to be an active member on both fishing forums and woodworking forums. On these sites also, the topic of money spent comes up. And every time I find there are two types of people. The first are the newbies (like me here) who are looking for an idea on what they are getting into (I'm nervous), how much they will end up spending( let's not kid ourselves, if your the type of guy who signs up for a forum dedicated to poker chips your the type fo guy who's gonna drop significant coin on them.... Then argue and try to explain with some buddies who love dice chips that the chips are worth it). The second are the grizzled vets, who reluctantly drop numbers and hope to hell someone out there drops a bigger one (there's always a bigger fish and by fish I don't mean the negative connotation that poker players attach to it)) and are looking for comfort and companionship in their common obsession.

i have a set of abs slugged chips purchased at Costco 50 bucks
i also have a cash set of China clays (I think) from straight poker supplies 125 bucks

but I ordered some paulson's from the chip room and I have a set of 1000 nexgen on their way...... The slope is getting slippery, I fear for my bank roll!

I am happy to say I am in the $1001-$2000 ($1465)
But this does have:

China Clay (Cash set)
Casino De Isthmus (Cash set)
Empress (Cash set, with primary $1's)
A Mixed Casino set (Cash set)
And 150 NYNY Las Vegas $1 chips (Short cane, relabeled as Empress $1's)

This Does NOT include my sample sets I have framed, the 14 sample sets on my desk at work, or the 4 sample sets I am waiting for, dealer buttons, or Cards.

OK maybe I am in the 2001 range now......;)

Yeh, I have wanted custom chips for years and years but didn't really ever have any disposable income or a regular group of players/friends who would appreciate it until now and I find myself on a very slippery slope as I see all the photos of amazing sets people have built over time. I have a funny feeling this is going to be spendy but I am confident that I will get my mileage out of them so I am ok with it!

Sorry for bumping an awkward thread, but my total is about $750, based on my paypal history. Adds up to 12-13 racks of Paulsons. Every purchase has been below $100 though... Feels a little like I'm laundering chips (and propping up the USPS). Gonna take a lot of $10 tournaments if I want to make that back.

Based on PZ's table, I'm at level 3...... :o

I got 2 paulson sets in under the level 2 budget. Feeling thrifty.

I'm working on a custom table with J5. That puts things in the embarrassed category. Now you will excuse me while I work on my next custom set.

PZ Level 4

I've been active as I ever have been of the last few months buying and selling. I'm so glad my girlfriend understand and accepts my "this is way better than collecting baseball cards" explanation for my love of casino chips.

Clearly this thread was used for blackmail later so to answer that would incriminate me to levels that might make a huge self off necessary. So with that I plead the 5th. Talk to my lawyer for further questions on this subject - TR Paulson esq.-

I've lost count. Too many sets and with continued adding on, it just keeps going up!

I was in level 2 when I joined this form at the end of December...a month and a half ago. Now I'm in level 5!

Yesterday, when the doorbell rang and another heavy box showed up... I confessed to my wife, "my name is Dave, and I'm a chipoholic....."

I'm glad someone said this!

I currently own 10 sets (I don't count anything below 600 as a set), have zero intention of selling 5 of them, have sold more sets than I can remember, have been doing this for nearly 15 years, and have used my own chips one time and have never hosted. On top of that I consider myself more of a collectable chip collector than a set collector.

As far as net amount spent, no idea, but If I had to guess I'd say in the $2500 range. However, I've been very, very thrifty and consider the search part of the fun.

I'm still a chip virgin. But I'm just under 1k with 2 tourney sets, 1 Ceramic, and 1 China Clay, and 1 Cash set China Clay. I have my eyes on so much stuff its not even funny though. If we're counting non-set stuff I have maybe another 200 wrapped up in single casino chips from places I've visited over the years but my Vegas chips are my prize collection and they're only 40 bucks total. I'd say by this time next year I'll be well over 1k though, it takes an internal fight everytime I see some Paulsons in the Classifieds. I have a couple sets I want though and I will have them eventually :)

I always assumed that when I reached a certain number of chips, and retired to Florida, they'd stop arriving at oh, roughly, a thousand per week.

I was wrong.
