How many years did you wait before investing in a high quality chip set? (3 Viewers)

Honestly I have a small hankering for better chips, specifically Paulsons, but I am really enjoying my cards mold customs so far. The people I play with aren’t chippers and think the current set is already grail level

I believe those THC $1s were 59 cents?
This is true. Also at the end of the sale he had the brand new secondary $25s somewhere around that price just to get rid of them he had so many. I am always in awe seeing those sell for 2-3 hundred a rack when TCR price was like 50 cents apiece.

Yeah I don’t remember their final chiproom price but I know it was a buck apiece or cheaper. It was the cheapest I’ve ever seen mint Paulsons. Though he had to do the same thing recently with diamond jacks. And those were $5 chips - PCF’s favorite!

Wonder what they will go for in another 10 years :)

It only seems that way. Jim had really cheap chips, especially if they were not new. And even now he makes such sales. Otherwise, clay chips have always been expensive. (I do not take into account all sorts of tigers and princesses now. I can not understand them at all. Although, I understand where their price is formed.)

As for my story, then somewhere after a year of presence on the blue site, I bought a lot of ASM samples and was simply delighted, although they offered only 312 at that time ... The prices were ungodly high, but about a year later, I bought my first good Paulson set, when the idea took root in my head that good chips retain their value when sold. Since then, I bought about 7 clay sets ... And I want an eighth ... And I have not sold a single one.

Started hosting games back in March and got an opportunity in June to buy a nice set that had only been used once for a discount. I'm so glad I did. I feel it definitely helped improve the quality of the game a bit and they're much nicer than the chips we previously used.

I've been planning an ASM/CPC set ever since the blue board days. Finally about ready to pull the trigger. Just need to get the inlay dialed in.

Bought my first set in June 2019.

Since then, haven’t looked back! Joined this forum in November 2020 and couldn’t keep my wallet empty enough. Immediately started trying to build my own custom relabel set and Poker at the Barr (PATB) was born about 9 months later:

Didn’t know anything about chips other than they were pretty and I liked them (hence the 1.0 version of this set having a black hundo LOL).

Fast forward four years, and like most us, I likely have more chips than I’ll ever need, but I love each and every one of them and they all get some felt time. I still have two unfinished projects that I’m hoping to shock the world with, one of which is PATB 2.0 ;)

We all have a journey in this madness and I wouldn’t change mine. My advice, don’t waste your money on stuff you don’t really want or stuff you don’t need or chips that aren’t high quality. Take your time, ask questions (99% of the people on this forum are amazing and have the answers), and find what you really want. And when you do, unload the f*ckin’ clip (wallet clip that is) and make it happen :)

I’m not sure what qualifies as a high quality set. I played with the slug chips for over 10 years. Decided I wanted new ones. Did google searched and got samples from many vendors. The majority of the chip samples were more slugs.

I stumbled onto BR Pro Poker. I bought some samples and purchased 1700 Nevada Jacks. My search also led me here. I’ve since sold the Nevada Jacks and purchased two Tina sets.

After getting the Tina sets, I wanted clay. So I pieced together a Paulson RHC set that I over labeled. To me, it was pricey. But I’m happy I did it.

So about 1 year after finding PCF.

Got my first set of 100 poker chips on a trip to Vegas just to see if there was any interest in playing back at my home.

Upgraded to some 500 ABS chips which felt nicer and still didn't break the bank a month after.

Currently I'm eyeing some ceramic chips to make the leap into decent chip territory with no added metal weights. All in all it's been a pretty quick journey of just 4 months I guess and from where I started it seems like it might be a few years before I think about going past ceramic chips. Maybe with enough poker winnings I'll invest in some CPC chips.

Nothing wrong with those. Some themed out inlays look great, and some look terrible. These look like pretty standard poker chips to me. And to me, that’s a good thing.
And they’re HHR’s so you could smear peanut butter on them and they’d still be awesome.

Playing with other people’s dice chips is part of what led me to find this community. My first nice(r) set came within a month of signing up for the blue wall.
