I thought it might be fun setting up a home mystery bounty tournament. But I’ve got no idea how much to break off the buy in for it?
So let’s say
18 players
$200 buy in

How much do I set aside for bounties and how much do I make them?

Thanks!

I’m doing the same thing for my next home tourney. I’m going to take 50% of the prize pool for bounties. Let’s run out an example for you…

$3600 total prize pool
$1800 for how you finish
$1800 in bounties

Mystery bounties could be on index cards inside envelopes. When they are knocked out they could draw for their bounty.

18 bounties
1 @ $450
2 @ $200
4 @ $100
11 @ $50
Does my math check out lol?

Rebuys could makes it tricky. Every rebuy could add another $100 mystery bounty. The other $100 goes in the traditional prize pool. Just have some envelopes ready.

I really like the idea of mystery bounties bc it rewards any player. Someone who isn’t as good has the chance to win some decent money. For example they get knocked 7th, don’t make ITM, but who knows…gets $500+ in bounties! Really rewards the amateur poker player and could help grow your games…

Why don’t you just play bingo…. That keeps the bingo players coming back…..

Not sure I follow lol.

You are still rewarding by how you perform.

If you win, you place + will have several bounties. Just a little more money allocated for someone who doesn’t place.

Wynn’s mystery bounty event has been extremely popular, and it appears they put a large % towards bounty but I have no idea what it is. I tried figuring out but couldn’t. So I just did 50/50 for an example.

I like the general idea as a little extra spice but I think 50/50 is way too much towards bounties. I’d probably stay clear if it was more than 10%

Looks like the Wynn breaks it down 2/3 traditional prize pool, 1/3 bounties.

Following the Wynn format but your buy in ($200) and 18 players…
$2400 prize pool
$1200 bounties

The Wynn Summer Classic $1,600 buy-in, $1.5 million GTD Mystery Bounty Event has finished its four opening flights, and today the surviving players from each flight will return for Day 2 action at Noon local time.

The tournament attracted 1,518 entries creating a $2,201,100 Total Prize Pool ($1,442,100 Main Prize Pool/$151,800 Day 1 Bounty Prize Pool/$607,200 Mystery Bounty Prize Pool). The top 152 finishers will get a piece of the regular prize pool with a min-cash being worth $2,509 while the eventual winner will claim a $217,948 top prize. Today, 211 players return to action.

Today, there are also "Mystery” Bounty prizes up for grabs that range in value from $500 to $100,000!

Here's how the tournament worked:

Each player on Day 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D (July 2-5) will be designated as a $100 bounty. A player who eliminates another player will win $100 from the bounty prize pool.
At the beginning of each Day 1, all players will receive a $100 bounty casino chip. Players are responsible for keeping their $100 bounty chip visible and on the table at all times. Any casino chips won as a result of eliminating another player may be removed from the table.
Each player advancing to Day 2, will get to collect $100 from the Bounty prize in exchange for their own Bounty chip.
Each player who has advanced to Day 2 on July 6, 2021 will be designated as a “Mystery” Bounty.
On Day 2, a player eliminating another player will receive a voucher for a “Mystery” Bounty prize . “Mystery” Bounty prizes may be redeemed by presenting your “Mystery” Bounty prize voucher to the Tournament staff located at the designated redemption location, at which time a Wynn representative will randomly withdraw an envelope from the drum on behalf of the player to reveal their “Mystery” Bounty prize.
“Mystery” Bounty prize amounts will be determined based on actual Tournament Entry fees received and displayed in the Tournament area prior to the beginning of the Tournament restart on Day 2.
The “Mystery” Bounty prize pool and prize amounts may not be altered. In the event that the Tournament concludes in a deal or chop, the bounty prize for each player will be randomly drawn by the Wynn representative and awarded accordingly.
All “Mystery” Bounty prizes will be displayed in the Tournament area prior to the beginning of the Tournament restart on Day 2.
“Mystery” Bounty prizes will range in value from $500 to $100,000.

This year our wsop series will award a WSOP seat as the top prize for our mystery bounty tournament. What we do is take $X from the prize pool and set it aside for bounties and have the top X players get bounties. This way we have the amounts predetermined and set up. This number is based on our projected attendance.

Last year we gave everyone who busted someone bounties but that just watered everything down. I’d suggest the top 1/3 or lower get bounties this way the $ amounts are worthwhile.

What is the mystery part of the bounty?
For a $200 buy in I suggest a $50-$80 bounty -thus total paid $250-$280, or making the buy in $100-150 with a $50 bounty.

I have always had a buy in amount and then X for a optional bounty chip, often the option would be "forced" though or the collective thrill is lost...so for example $100 buy in and then another $20-$50/bounty. 1 Head per player, no bounties with rebuys (at least that is how I run things). Bounty pool and prize pool run separately. I have played in two versions, 1-where the player with the most bounty chips takes the total bounty pot, 2-where each bounty chip is worth the bounty buy value and can be traded in by all players holding one or more bounty chips after elimination or the end of the bounty hunt period. I suggest option 2 as it gives opportunity for more players to "win" something, option one will eventually lead to discouragement if a player is very dominant holding multiple "heads". I only allow the taking of the individual not the group so if a player has multiple bounty chips after rolling over the competition at most they can only loose their own head (tried it the other way once and the result is players ganging up on the individual with the most bounties and ruins the flow of the game).

I did a $20 mystery bounty on an $80 buyin tournament ($60 buyin, $20 bounty).

I usually split the bounty with high hand but having some extra $$ in the bounty pool allowed for more big prizes.

This was my prize breakdown, most got half the bounty buyin but one got 5x and another 2.5x.

Bounty AmountsNumberTotal%
$1014$14078%
$201$206%
$300$00%
$502$10011%
$1001$1006%
18$360100%

It was @MrCastro127's suggestion and I think he also ended up winning most of the big prizes now that I think of it. Hmmm...

I'm going to make some Mystery Bounty Hot Stamp chips this weekend and run one for a Monday night Game soon....

We took 1/3 of the prize pool and once rebuy period was over, you could cash in bounty chips at any time and pick an envelope. Envelopes had different amounts. I didn’t create the prize amount and envelopes until the rebuy period was over.

I did 1/3 of the prize pool bc that’s what the Wynn does.

Would you have as many envelopes as bounty chips? I paid out X dollars per bounty chip for all players eliminated still holding bounties first then after rebuy period paid out each bounty chip.

I looked at what other large tournaments had done for splits. One of the hardest parts is getting the number of prizes to match mumber of bounties.
I was thinking this as well. My home game doesn't have a strict late reg period because they're degenerates and want to spin it up with 10BB so I'm never going to know the exact amount of buyins/bounties. However, if I "budgeted" for say 10 mystery bounty prizes, and in fact there ended up being 12 needed, to me it's not end of the world if the remaining 2 ended I assigned to be the generic small bounty prize. Alternatively, those 2 extra buyins could just go into the regular prize pool. There may be an oversight on my behalf I missing though.

It was a bit easier for me as my tournaments include one rebuy or addon (no additional can be purchased) the bounty isnt lost until you are completely out of the tournament.

Just in case I designed my tournament so that if there was an additional buyin that amount went in the full bounty envelope.

I also randomly marked each envelope with a rank & suit and bounty redeemers pulled a card from a corresponding stack. That way there was no risk of someone figuring out what envelope held what due to thinkness, etc.

I'm going to take 40 or so chips, Hot Stamp them in TRK Denoms in Various 5 dollar increments. So at the rebuy period, I can just throw the amount of the mystery pot with the number of bounties in a crown royal bag.

Toss the chips in air tites, boom. We got money.

Let them draw!

Got TRK Denoms coming in .25 to 5K in process to help this.

The chips I'll use for this venture.

If this ends up working awesome, maybe I'll take a few sets to give away or sell.

Very clever!

I do 2 bounty tournaments a year. For one of them, last year, I also had a secret bounty. I have dice chips with labels for them, 1-25. I have an identical set. I shuffle one on the table face down. Each player draws one, but doesn't show it to anyone else. Then I put the other set down, shuffled, and had someone draw one chip. Whatever number it matched was the secret bounty. When someone is KO'd, they have to turn over their secret bounty chip. Everyone knows the number of the secret bounty since that one was exposed for everyone.

I'm planning to do it again this year, and may even do two secret bounties this year.
