I Quit My Job To Play Poker AMA (1 Viewer)

I don't know man, I'm the conservative naysayer. With a job you get paid to do what they ask, with this high variance Omaha "job" you can show up and do everything right and still lose all your money. Plus you say you have debts and no health insurance. I think it would be wise to start looking for a better job now. Family owned businesses can and do provide health insurance and other benefits, and not all jobs grind you down 70-80 hours per week. I can't see a successful life made in low stakes Omaha. I am a CPA and I agree no income is not a good thing on a tax return either.

I've never met you and I'm not trying to be critical of your poker abilities, I just can't help but to see ruin at the end of this road. You said stress was affecting your marriage, think of the stress when you HAVE to win at a difficult to beat high variance raked game. My advice keep playing but hit the bricks looking for a good job also. The employment market is about as good as it gets right now.

I intend to report income on my tax return, don't need any trouble from Uncle Sam

For me, 2/5/10 PLO with a 2k buyin and 30/60 mixed games aren't low stakes, and my hourly is way beyond anything I've ever made in my life

As far as the game being "difficult to beat high variance", I would say if I was playing the higher stakes hold em games here that would be the case. It's mostly tables full of pros waiting for 1 whale

My PLO games there are at most 2 other pros in the game usually with me, the rest are sucky regs, recreationals or whales

I play a lower-variance style, so it's rare I'm in spots to get hurt too badly, and I have a stop-loss and I'm not afraid to quit a game that is bad.

I appreciate your concern, nothing wrong with being the voice of reason

But this new path has improved my relationship and my personal health. I spend more quality time with my wife, I have more joy and less exhaustion

I socked aside half a years living expenses plus a seperate roll, and have multiple plan B's should I need to make a change

Did you quit your job like this?

Good luck in the great game of Pot Limit Omaha!

Lol, no I don't like burning bridges. You never know whose ass you kick today will be the ass you have to kiss tomorrow lol

Even after quitting my job, a month later was my bosses 50th bday and I made him a Tampa Bay Lightning themed PC as a gift cause he's a big fan

I still regularly keep in touch and give the old work crew updates on my progress

Does this mean you'll have more time to join us in the P* tourneys? :D

also the competition is high.
We are not worth his time. Our $15 buy ins are peasant status.

Lol, my time at home is spent watching shows with the wife and playing computer games to relax. Getting my poker fix plenty

I know folks want to know my hourly. I'll say it's between $50-100/hr. And I don't only play fri/sat or even the most premium times

The majority of my sessions are 10am-6pm, 12pm-8pm, 3pm-10pm

So I'm not even there at 2am when people are probably even worse. I have played some sessions into the early mornings like that and it always fucks me up for the next days session

So I've found sessions I can win at, that still allow me to come home and go to bed with the wife, sometimes have lunch and watch a show before I go in, etc

Anthony how many hours do you have logged at your PLO and mixed games? Maybe my memory is fuzzy or I'm confusing you with someone else but if I'm right it wasn't that long ago you were playing like 1/3 holdem?

Must be thinking of someone else. I've played 1/2, 1/3 and 2/5 NL Hold em, but not all that much

I quit my job in September, so still a small sample size in the grand scheme of things. At 350 hours, realize I need to log a lot more

But fortunately I see a lot of the same faces in the game, so it's easy to play exploitative because I am familiar with them all

And we still get fresh faces as well that I can size up fairly quickly. I pay attention to the hands I'm not in, pay attention to stack sizes, betting tells, etc

You are a self-proclaimed nit....I assume this means you are tight aggressive (for the most part) in actuality. How do you play this style in such a wild game? Do you let others drive the action when you have a solid hand and others are betting with random cards, or are you more likely to bet/raise?

I am TAG. Although some players view me as a rock, others as a big bluffer and others see me as a calling station

My strategy in a hand depends on position and the other players

There are times I'll take someone to valuetown and drive the betting because they are inclined to call

In other instances, I'll check the nuts with nut redraw (AA25 on an A34 flop) because I know other players will do my betting for me)

As for my perception of myself, I feel I have a fairly tight range preflop (most of the time I enter the pot it's with a full 4 card legit hand that works together, but I don't only play premiums)

The biggest thing I learned early on when playing deepstacked is to not give away when I have good Aces with reraises unless I can get it all in preflop or create a low SPR so that my flop decision is automatic.

Otherwise the good players will call with implied odds for your stack and know half your hand

As far as the game being wild, it varies. The Monday game with restraddles CAN be crazy, but not EVERY hand

Likewise, the 2/5/10 game can be full of stations sometimes, and usually I raise preflop to just $25

I tend to employ a pull strategy, I want multiway pots where I can flop the nuts or a monster draw and play for stacks

Because I play deep and this game is so flop dependent for you to have an idea of your equity, I rarely am looking to employ a push strategy to narrow the field

Plus, by employing a pull strategy, you satisfy the desire of all the bad players in the game who want to play every hand and see a flop, so it keeps them from getting bored, while they slowly lose money each hand

My wife just made this and had to share

What did your wife say?

What tipped you out of being an "employed, poker hobbyist" and into "unemployed, poker pro"? I get that there were pressures to make a change (job stress, etc.), but what made you wake up one morning and say "today's the day"?

What did your wife say?

It was actually her idea. She knew how beat down I was from my job

we needed drivers on the road and my boss kept hiring staff for the office instead, thinking that would take the pressure off

I realized it was only going to keep getting worse and knew how it was affecting me personally and my wife.

We talked about it and agreed I would give my notice and make the change.

Bonus points in knowing that Jenn is onboard.

Now you just got to get her to stick around during the meet-ups...

She's coming in Feb to the suicide queen melee, but she gets bored with poker and is introverted, so will probably make an appearance at a group meal out

As an introvert myself, I find poker is therapeutic. I can phase out of the conversations and everything and focus on my play. In fact, if it ever appears that I'm doing well, it's because I'm not paying attention to all the stories.

It's also the reason we never stay at a shared AirBnB, and my play sessions are shorter than most. I need the time to "decompress".

Sounds a bit like my wife, except “gets bored with poker” would presume that she is ever interested in poker. :)

However, she did suggest for our anniversary trip (25 years on New Year’s Eve!) that we get a room at a casino, and I could play while she locks herself in the room with a book.
