Life long reds fan here. Haven’t been to a game in a few years. Almost drove to Cincinnati this weekend.

Good god, do MLB players not understand how the game is played? Why is the 1st baseman chasing down Baez? It's a simply force play at 1st base just step back to the bag and the inning would be over and the run wouldn't count. Gotta give Baez credit with baiting the Pirates into that.

The summer after my senior year in high school, I probably saw 45 games. I've been to 40+ MLB parks and all current parks except Seattle, Houston, Minnesota (and isn't there a new one in Dallas now? And isn't Oakland opening a new one too?).
I don't love the game like I used to. I probably haven't seen more than two or three games live in the last 4 years.

Even more stupid (can't actually be more stupid than trying to run down the batter but) is the 2nd baseman doesn't backup & covers 1st, after the dumb rundown attempt they could have still throw out Baez at 1st and saved the run. So many thing wrong with this play.

a fielders choice and an error on the throw by the catcher. I don’t think they can rule errors for mental errors, but that first baseman is an idiot.

That is a weird scoring situation. If it’s not E5 or E3, then it has to be a base hit and an RBI, with Javy advancing to 2nd on the throwing error by the catcher.

No it's a fielders choice. You still get the rbi though, but it counts as an out. I know this because I also have Baez lol

You can’t have a fielders choice if there was not an out recorded right? Wasn’t the error on the throw to first?
I know it was ruled a fielders choice but they could have ruled an error on the initial throw from the 3rd basemen which drew Craig off the bag or on the throw from the catcher. Truly a crazy play.

Sure you can. If a player tries a sacrifice bunt, and the fielder tries and fails to throw out the lead runner it’s a fielder’s choice with no out. Happens all the time. And the error was on the catchers throw to first, which was after the runner scored (but which would have negated the run because a force play for the third out precludes a run). Very simple rules these /s
