It's Official, The Gnu Is Moving To Florida! (2 Viewers)

Hide yo chips, hide yo cut cards and hide yo buttons

Your money is safe though. SCHWING!

(Unless you are bluffing 3 streets and Gnu has ace high. Then you're focked. ;))

Seriously nice-looking digs though Anthony. Amazing what $1200 will get you outside of South Canada, eh?

Nice place...And you'll double your space, once you move in your miniaturized furniture:p...Couldnt resist. You are lucky to be getting away from this weather!

I'm totally converting it into a hobbit hole.

I thought they pay their rent with Vermont Maple Syrup in Canada, or is that how they heat their homes?

well the goon gnus is that of the approximately 12,000 people who move to the Tampa area every year, 8,000 are dead by overdose or in prison by the following year, so you just have to live with those odds.

And the other 4,000 are hookers.

What does it cost to rent a place like that in FLA?

I'm sorry, I don't know Canadian currency. I think it comes out to one moose hoof and three bottles of Vermont Maple Syrup, with a hockey puck as a security deposit.

When are you making the move, gnu?

Starting our drive down on March 1st. Planning to arrive on day 3 of the journey, doing the bulk of the driving on day 1, about 30% less on day 2 and then day 3 we're only doing about 3.5 hours of driving so we have energy to unpack and get settled.

My wife and I had been wanting to move to NC in the future, get away from the ice and snow, the high home prices, etc. This is obviously further south than we had wanted, but my boss is covering the relocation expenses and Florida will be cheaper than CT somewhat, plus no snow, so we'll take it!

We've got enough yankees down here already. They've already outgrown CARY, often referred to as Containment Area for Relocated Yankees.

We were looking at the Wilmington area (although I guess the only casino is way out in the western mountains, bummer) Oh, you guys will LOVE me. I plan on hopping off the plane wearing a cowboy hat, a HUGE belt buckle, making pistols with my fingers and "shooting" them into the air while I yell YEE-HAWWWWWW! I definitely plan to fit right in. Oh, and I hate NASCAR.

But, I do love me some Apple Butter (first discovered it's existence last year on a trip to the deep south of Delaware). I think it's the reason there's so much happiness in the south. I took two packets of the stuff with me north to breed them up here and introduce them into the general population in the hopes of reducing the grumps that permeate

it really is astonishing how many people i know who have moved from NY/NJ down to NC over the past ten years. if i had my druthers i'd drag my wife out to AZ/NM before the deep south or florida (which not, with a few carve outs excepted, the deep south imo). i do like charlotte and atlanta, though.

Good luck with AZ/NM! Winters in NM -- even lower down, like in ABQ, can be nasty. And further north, like Taos and Santa Fe, are worse. Great in summer, but...

And we considered Tucson, after visiting in January, until they hit a week in July with 117 deg each day! There's a reason why all the tennis play is at night out there...

And if you're masochistic enough to deal with the traffic around Atlanta, good on yer! (My family was up around Alpharetta for many years.)

There are pluses and minuses everywhere. Tough choices, indeed.

Yeah, I'm planning on the snow bird lifestyle. New Hampshire is beautiful in the fall/summer, and florida for the winter. Going down right after thanks giving, returning for BBotB.

I think you are mistaking 'deep south' with 'southwest'. Florida ain't Texas. At least you probably won't get shot acting like that in Florida Tampa (Miami, even odds).

Nope, the true reason that southerners are happier is the presence and power of the sun. No more months-on-end of gloomy skies await you. Seldom goes more than 2-3 days without at least a gorgeous afternoon. I think you'll be totally hooked before April hits.

Can't wait until your first trip report on grits.

I was referring to NC when he said they have enough Yanks there :P

If he's wearing only a cowboy hat and huge belt buckle, he'll fit right in with the Miami crowd.

EDIT: I should probably clarify for the non-Floridians that this was a joke aimed at South Beach. There are other parts of Miami that dressing this way would almost definitely get you shot.

This. I've lived in central Florida for nearly 25 years now, and I'd have a very hard time re-adjusting to a cold sunless winter even though I grew up in the Midwest. I get cranky if I go more than a couple days without direct sunshine.

A few years ago I spent three weeks in Fairbanks, Alaska in the middle of December. It was a fascinating experience getting only 3-4 hours a day of dim sunshine, but I was so out of sorts by the time I got home that it took me a week to recover.

I work overnights in a darkroom. Most days, I see the sun for the drive home and that's it. In warmer weather I am out more with outdoor activities, but still not a whole lot. I have been working midnights for almost a solid 20 years straight. There were 3 brief periods of day jobs, but that didn't last for long. There was a time at my current job when I went to first shift for about 6 months. After about a week I was overall in a much better mood all the time. It took me a little while, but it finally dawned on me...the sun!! After all these years I am used to the strange sleep times and the other stuff that goes with a third shift job, but I will probably never get used to the lack of sun.

I usually get the blues in February because of so little sunshine in January and February in Chicago. This year hasn't been so bad as we've had quite a few days where it's not overcast. Somebody told me to get a sunlamp. I haven't done it, but maybe it would work?

The weird thing about me is that I'm very much a night owl, and years ago I would have considered a third shift job like yours to be perfect for me. I still battle with sleeping on a "regular" schedule: my typical night's sleep is 2 AM to 9 AM, and I'm very fortunate to work for a company who cares more about the work I do than the times I do it.

Just the same, I have to see the sun for at least a few minutes every day. Winter is a big pain when I work until 6:30-7:00 most nights since the sun has long gone down when I leave the office.

Eastern NC 'cue (vinegar based) is the best barbecue and the superior style in NC, yet there are many debates over that.

I've never even heard of apple butter. I hate Nascar as well.

there are a couple of eastern carolina style whole hog vinegar-based sauce bbq places in atlanta that i enjoyed every so often, but i still prefer georgia style bbq over all else, which i'm sure is at least somewhat a function of palette development. i certainly agree that eastern carolina bbq is superior to the pork shoulder variety available elsewhere in NC.
