I always thought the yellow film was a optical brightener agent. I only see it on vibrant colors (HSI sec 2.5, 5, and 25). The snappers having the worse amount of film since they were overheated. That’s my theory.
Wiki link to Optical brighteners.
Doing a little reading on optical brightening agents, this could be EXACTLY what the substance is. These agents are added to increase the luminosity of products (even laundry detergents to make clothes appear “whiter”)...and would be enhanced under UV light.
Sound familiar?

But it's probably not supposed to leach out of the chips and transfer to whatever you touch, if that's what it is.

Anyone able to post some close up pics of used lower value chips (face and edge) so we can see how badly worn they are? My sample 5 was incidentally in much better shape than the 25 - not sure how representative that is or the entire batch.

My used $1's and $5's were in really good condition. My $25's were a lot better than I anticipated. I'll post up some pictures of them tonight when I get a chance.

Thanks!
Is it just me or does it appear as though there’s more thinning on the 25s than on the 5s and 1s?Not sure if this is just an optical illusion because of the colors of the chips. More discolouration too.

seems to confirm what I noticed from the sample set used chips.

i think the 25s are just bit rounder on the edges, not sure i dont have any but it looks like 20 not 21 will fit in a paulson rack

Thanks!

The 25's are more rounded than the 1's and 5's, It's not that bad actually and the ones I have are in really good condition. They stand on edge easily. I'll clean 'em up and see how it looks afterward I only bought 1's and 25's to help me reach my limits during the sale, but I might keep them now lol. I do want some of those secondaries though.....

You’re making the used ones sound a lot more appealing - the 25 in my sample set would definitely not stand on edge and the top hat imprint was pretty flat on the 5. I backed out of my order when the new chips disappeared but I’m regretting it. :vomit:

I don't blame you. It's a gamble when it comes to used chips. Here is another picture. Randomly grabbed 5 chips from each color and stood them on edge. Here are the results. if they fell over, I just left them down. Not bad if you tell me. and my desk slightly slants down the left.

I received my package—all bought after the first hour was up. Awesome overall. The minty 25s and 500s will go into my mixed Jack sets right away.

Note on the used THC $1s which may be of use to others:

I bought three racks. These separate very clearly into two grades: Nearly mint and Used.

The ratio in my batch was pretty much exactly 1:2 (1 Nearly Mint for every 2 Used).

The two grades were mixed together in the boxes, but when viewed on edge the mintier ones stuck out really obviously. The newer ones are much whiter. The more used ones have a slight pink-grey cast, especially obvious on the rolling edge.

Within the Used 2/3rds, there are a small number which are much more used. I’d say maybe 15-20 out of the ~200 Used grade chips.

I’m going to give the Used ones a Faux TSP bath; I expect this to upgrade another rack of them to looking nearly new.

In short: If (say) you wanted two racks of Nearly Mint Jack Cincy $1s, without having to clean any or accept some slight rounding, you probably need to buy six racks to cherry pick. If you are willing to accept some signs of use, and to do some cleaning, that number I anticipate will be more like 300 to get 200. Will revisit after cleaning.

Just gave these a two-minute bath in faux TSP, agitated manually with a salad spinner. The “after” pic is below, with the best of them in the center column.

Results: I was only able to “promote” about 13 out of the lesser 200 to join the rack of Nearly News... 20 of them I think are just substandard (bad check marks or flea bites).

The rest are improved—the water certainly was dirty—but still less bright than the best rack. I may try an ultrasonic, or I may just accept that these are, indeed, used. Tempted, though, to buy another couple racks and keep picking... I will probably sell one less appealing rack well below cost.
