9 times out of 10 chip guide scans are terrible and not even close to the actual colors
Oh I hear you. But just the brightness of each scan makes me lean toward it being a better idea of the true colour, even if just as a starting point to extrapolate toward a Company's palette. Weirdly lit photos from a sale ad are just too wildly variable.

And if there's one thing I will NEVER do, it's take the ChipGuide name of a colour for anything but the vaguest suggestion of what the actual colour is. :confused

Posting here is definitely no point other than make sure the price goes up 10x. Reach out to someone directly in the area if you know someone, or if you want to give someone a good deal. Most likely someone from PCF is already on it and posting links here just makes people spam the seller with offers/sabotage/call-it-what-you-want. It's happened so many times by now.

It's fun to see these lots, but it's better to post them after the deal is final. And by final I do not mean paid for only, I mean chips in hand.

Oof lol. Just got pointed to this thread. I have way too much to say on this topic to even know where to begin. I think the primary lesson to learn for the greater audience though is if you find something good outside of PCF, do not post it here. It will get sniped every time. There is money to be made from chip finds. Sometimes a lot of money. Everyone on PCF that is hunting for chips is doing so to make money off of them. It is a cutthroat game. If you post Craigslist pics here (or wherever they're from) you have effectively just turned that listing into an episode of Storage Wars.

Also, no, it wasn't me, and I don't know who it was either. I don't even look for chips at all these days. Hell, I don't even subscribe to the classifieds or even Chip Room sales anymore either. However, if I had come across a sale like this, I probably would have offered the lady more money than she was asking for them too. I don't like seeing old ladies, or whichever next of kin inherited their father's collections, getting ripped off.

Definitely sucks to have a deal stolen from you after you've already paid though. That's lame.

I would wager a lot of money though that there's no way 4 people showed up to her estate sale simply to inform her that these were worth way more money than she was asking, while simultaneously not attempting to purchase the chips. Lol, ya right lady. Also, no way anybody offered her $5k for them. Sounds like perhaps this particular lady did deserve to get ripped off after all? Lol. At least you got your money back though, Dan.

Also worth remembering is that for every member you see here discussing chip finds and posting in these threads, there are at least 5 others silently taking notes and taking action. That's one thing I learned from looking under the hood at CD. There are a lot more people lurking around (and looking to profit) than you'd think.

this was my immediate thought as well, she was exaggerating to get out of the sale. but one person definitely did. sucks dude.

Holy fuck! I was just posting away in this thread, not having realized that I missed a post or two. Couldn't understand all the "close the thread" statements........

Yeah, just yuck.

I'll comment quickly then leave it at that. I spoke to the seller and she noted that four people came to the sale this morning (as of 10am PT) to discuss the chips - not to make an offer, but specifically to tell her that she undersold them. In addition to this, she also got offers of upwards of $5,000 on the phone this morning.

Now, I'm not going to assume that every person who reached out via phone or went in person knowing the chips were sold and paid for is from PCF. We aren't the only people in the world who collect massive sets of poker chips. However, I would be willing to bet that at least some of the people who took time out of their day to go there were from this community and were informed of this thread. The only thing I would ask of you would be to reflect on what possible good could have come from your actions. What were you trying to accomplish? Seriously - think about it.

Anyway, I couldn't give a shit about the chips at this point. This community has changed, and not for the better. The good people who truly cared about taking care of folks post less and less, often times resorting to PM to sell/trade chips. It's disappointing really, but it is what it is at this point.

I got my money back. Have at it, sharks.

I'm out.
This is what’s wrong with the world today. The “Hooray for me and FU”attitude. :vomit:

Very sorry to read this Dan...espec since you shared so many cool things & sales with all/other members.
I'm not surprised tho...like Mike said.

If things keep going this way, we'll lose +75% of the members that still know what The Blue Wall was...and all knowledge and chipsets with them.

Not blaming PCF...I guess this is what happens when a niche hobby, enjoyed by a small group of geeks that know everyone by name, gets big.
I liked small & geeky thb

Sad day when people drive over just to tell the seller they undersold the set....you want some salt with that ?

I don’t appreciate this insinuation in the least. I didn’t know anything about this, and hadn’t even seen this thread, as I’ve been traveling to Utah all day, and am currently in the desert.

Only knew about this because a friend from PCF WhatsApp’ed me the link.

Accusations and insinuations without merit, knowledge or proof are what damage communities. I have always been stand-up about deals, and absolutely don’t find it necessary to undercut or take over someone else’s.

Zaki, since this is the 4th time you have made some kind of insinuating post about me, I will assume we have a problem. It’s a pity, because there really doesn’t need to be one.

For the record, I know nothing about this.

I personally thought it was funny given the degree of intensity and how it escalated really quickly. All in good fun without necessarily jumping to the conclusion that we have a problem. I’m one of the last people that’ll bounce around PCF with the intention of damaging the community. I’m very mindful of how our community works, and I try to help as much as possible with the occasional leg-pull here and there. That’s all.

Safe travels Krish.

I dont think 5k is unreasonable for these chips. I actually think they are worth quite a bit more than that.

Almost 1600 brass inlay paulsons. Looks like most of them have sharp edges too. Got to be atleast 5 bucks a chip in my opinion. Who has another set?

They look like they are in great shape too. I can definatley see someone offering 5k for the set.

Its pretty shitty to go behind dans back and try to pick these up after they were bought and paid for.

This pic shows all the denoms except the 10c chips that you can see in the first pic.

I believe the seller was being honest with dan about the people contacting her and the offers she received. Also FYI the seller was going to honor the deal even after everyone contacted her. Dan backed out of it because the seller felt bad that she had undervalued them, and because he was disgusted by the community for intentionally trying to sabotage his deal.

I hope we don't lose Dan as a member because of this. In my opinion a much bigger loss to the community than a few clay disks.

Sorry, but this is complete bullshit IMO. Again, wasn't me, and have no idea who it was. I didn't realize it was a full set of 1600 CIC Paulsons with minty edges. I don't know what the lady was asking, or what Dan offered to pay her, but I agree, these are DEFINITELY worth more than $5k. If she was asking a few hundred bucks or something crazy like that, then it's completely fair game for anyone who wanted to show up at her estate sale, in person, inform her that they are actually worth thousands of dollars, and offer her to pay her what they're worth. The idea that any member somehow "owns" them already because they think they sniped them is ridiculous (sorry Dan, no disrespect, you know I like you). I just see this as entirely different from others here. This lady has something that was probably left to her after the loss of a loved one. If someone wants to show up at her door and pay her what they're worth she shouldn't have to honor a deal to someone else who is only looking to flip them for huge profits. If you're a "chip hunter", then these are the risks you take. But nobody owes you anything. You want to write code for web scrapers to snipe and flip chips (I know, Dan didn't write them) then you should know and expect competition. Even if you think you've already closed a deal. Nothing is yours until they're in your hand. Especially if you're completely raking someone over the coals.

This is probably part of a lengthy dispute regarding how chippers feel about finding chips, honored sales, etc vs someone who’s just selling some clay circles. The lady obviously doesn’t realize this and isn’t familiar with how our community goes about these type of things, call it the chippers version of a gentleman’s word. Can’t really blame her. If it was someone that saw it via Dan and ran to it however, shame on them, not her.

What part of what i said was complete bullshit?

The seller was a business. Someone who stages and sells estates for a living. So no, they wernt left to her by a loved one. In my opinion, especially in this case, the seller should have done some research to know what she is selling. These also were not bought for pennies. The price was north of 1200 bucks, which is a significant amount to send to someone who you are not sure is going to follow through on the deal.

I still think its shitty to go and try to buy chips that someone else has already bought and paid for. I wouldnt do it, and I think its shitty.

Also only 1 person has a chip finding algorithm and he doesnt even hunt for chips anymore. I dont have access to it Dan doesn't have access to it. We search for chips just like everyone else does. We just message eachother when we find something good so we don't step on eachothers toes to get a deal.

If I found these I would have kept them. Dan was strongly leaning toward keeping them also.

Its a one of a kind set and now its just going to go to the highest bidder.
