Need slightly larger table - what to do (1 Viewer)

Did you check if a 72" x 42" oval might fit. That is the table I am having built. Seats 8 fine, 9 tight

Thanks. The boss told me the day we moved in, that this is MY room. it's 400sqf, so I can fit pretty much any table I want. it's more about the multi-purpose function of the room, so I don't want to crowd it with an oval table, but I'm warming up to the idea. I see some really nice tables on this site, so it's tempting.

My thoughts here after reading what everybody had to say ..

I think a round rail with an octagon playing surface would look pretty funny. There would also be some pretty major support issues, I'm not even sure it would really be possible. Think about laying an octagon into a circle and all the unsupported space.

You currently have a 4" rail. I'd say most tables seem to have a 6" rail. The talk of having an 8" rail doesn't seem out of the question, it's just a lot of wasted space. The problem you'd have would again be support. Your current rail should just pop off, and will probably have a base sheet under it thats roughly 1.5" smaller then the rail. That means your existing rail has 2.5" of support for a 4" rail. It also means you would have 2.5" of support for an 8" rail. I would think it would flex a lot when people lean against it.

Unfortunately, your current table was built with a very specific purpose. To modify that purpose isn't ideal to say the least. It really sounds like you'd be better off with a different table that provides you more flexibility. I know you love the one you currently have, but you can love another one just as much!

By that rational, I'd have 10 wives. Hmm... Seriously, I have the same concerns. Not sure what you meant about round and octagon though. I was thinking another octagon rail.

IDK, this week, I only got 5 players. Worst count every. Everyone had plans tonight. So, again, maybe a problem that doesn't exist.

Keep the ideas coming though.

Well having multiple tables is legal at least lol.

The round vs octagon thing was just responding to other comments in this thread about using a round rail with your existing table to increase rail space, and thus increase player space.

IMO 8 players is the comfortable max on a round (or octagonal) table. You can play more. I have played up to 10 on my 58" round but it is not comfortable. Bigger than that makes the table center out of reach for everyone. Round is clearly better than ony polygonal shape because it allows varied numbers of players without an issue. If you want to seat 9-10 comfortably, you just have to go oval, elliptical, etc.
