OK, might be coming out of the geek closet, but I played D&D back in the day.. I was really into RPGs, played regularly. My father was also seriously into gaming, and even invented his own post apocalyptic RPG, that we often played. My claim to fame is playing a marathon gaming session with Gary Gygax back in the day (in Chicago). I own boxes of old RPG books, and dice.. tons of dice. But I haven’t played in 30 years

So, why bring this up now? Well my 15 yo daughter has a bunch of friends who are starting to play D&D regularly. In fact, a couple of the fathers are also joining in. Well, what does a guy who was a serious RPGer do when his daughter starts to play, he joins in, of course. So I played a D&D session with my daughters group this last week, and it was fun. Granted, it wasn’t as serious as we used to play, but it created a great opportunity to bond with my daughter.

So does anyone still play RPGs? Did you play back in the day? Sound off...

I don’t play any and D&D isn’t my thing but I have been collecting cool sounding RPGs lately on the off chance my boys want to play something in the future.

I do listen to a bunch of RPG podcasts and quite enjoy them

I have been playing in my personal longest D&D campaign ever, about 2.5 years with the same characters. Playing a lvl 14 Divination Wizard, and it's been super fun. I also DM a dungeon crawl campaign (playing through Tales From the Yawning Portal), which has been a blast too. Taking a break for summer for that campaign. 5E has been a great edition so far, looking forward to seeing the Eberon book when it comes out in a couple months.

I've always played D&D. Started when I was about 12, played with a semi-organized drop in group through high school years, and continued playing with my best friends through most of our college/early job years. Took a break when 3rd edition got too big, skipped 4th edition because it lost its RPG flavor. Got 5th edition and play now and again with my teenage sons. My older son is starting to play with a bunch of school buddies, and I'm wondering if they might be interested in a campaign with me to DM. My collection of RPG gear completely dwarfs (in $ spent and spatial dimensions) my poker chip collection.

As someone who loves to collect instruments of gaming (chips), I naturally love dice... when my daughter dragged me into Pegasus Games (a local gaming store I used to frequent when I was a kid), I had to snag some new dice. I already had a set of dice or two (or ten), Even some used during my infamous Gygax session... but I wanted something new. I settled on metal dice, which were not cheap, but I could not pass up on these torched beauties... I was disappointed that most dice sets no longer come with 3d6... I also learned that 5E has this “advantage” feature requiring frequent rolling of 2d20, so I was perplexed at the lack of a 2nd d20... so I went onto my dice manufacturers site and ordered more d6 and d20 dice. The metal dice are cool, and roll like Thor's hammer, sticking in place when they hit the surface... if I were DMing, these dice would instill fear into the players...

My dice were stored in my old school dice Tupperware container (which I used when I was a kid). I gave it an upgraded vinyl bottom for better rolling (table build scraps). My daughter is jealous....

Nice dice! I should break mine out sometime. They haven’t seen the light of day in quite some time. We could compare collections.

Damn this brings back memories. I played many years and have not thought about playing again since like 1988... I have well did not sure where they all went at the moment books, dice, figure, etc. I used to have a small army of 15 mm miniatures and followed the Handful of Miniatures rules for battles. Played weekly with one main group and many others here and there. Glad you are getting back into this.

Trihonda, your 15 year old daughter plays D&D?!?!! Wow. You are one lucky Dad.

I met my wife in a role playing game in college (Earthdawn). Not sure if that is more or less geeky than playing with Gary Gygax...

Anyway, very jealous of you: sounds awesome!

I work for a private social club. One of our members and I got into a conversation about 80s PC games once, which lead into D&D. I don’t remember the circumstances, but IIRC the gentleman said that he worked with Gary at one time. Possibly at TSR but I don’t recall.

Pretty cool I think

I would publish the list of RPGs we still own, but A quick look puts is at just 67. I know that is sadly incomplete, as we have (probably) every GURPS book ever printed.

I've never played GURPS.

Anyone ever play Space Opera? Omg I remember marathon weekends of space conquest as a kid. Such a great SCI FI game. In going through my old books, I discovered the entire rules set and almost all the published SO appending books. I never purchased them, must have been hand me downs from my dad.

I have the pdf version of almost everything pre 5th edition so if you are looking for something specific just ask and I will see if i have it. You can find most books and modules with a quick google search but there are a few things that are difficult to find.

Nice! That sounds like some excellent family bonding. I've been playing Shadow Lord which is a variant, very similar to DnD. We usually meet bi-weekly and my character design is built around a street urchin who got involved in the gambling ring and owes lots of people money. Main attributes are time, space, and teleportation magic so he keeps a deck of cards on him that act as darts or a cool throwing weapon. I use some Opalite gemstone dice and this is the mini that I commissioned my buddy to paint. It's the one on the left. If you zoom in you can see playing cards.

Wow, you guys seriously NEVER get rid of stuff, do you?

I only keep really USEFUL stuff.

Uh, like my copy of “Stellar Conquest”.

(Okay, I’ve not opened the box since 1989 but really do want to play a full game of that someday. Granted, the game’s record-keeping is so obtuse I’d need to find 3 aspiring accountants to get a game together... hmm... maybe I should have been an accountant. Urg. This forum is making me realize all manner of slightly awkward things about myself.)

I'd love to join you guys for a campaign!

I've played a bit of d&d 5e in the past and want to find a campaign to join in the near future

And you’re fairly close by... ha! Ok, I wouldn’t classify my daughters game group as epic enough to justify an hour + drive. Their sessions only run 3-4 hours. My commute is much shorter, and I’m sometimes on the fence, lol..

I’m digging 5E thus far, but it’s been only one session, and with a teenage DM, who knows what she’s doing mostly, but isn’t experienced like I’m used to. Don’t get me wrong, she’s turning into a great story teller, and is doing mostly good... but For instance;

1- allowing characters to flip back and forth between weapons... one character is holding a knife to the throat of a goblin.. and allowing that character to use a sheathed scimitar instead to attack...
2- Another issue seems to be the realism of battle... when a player is engaged in close combat with a monster, she tends to randomize who the monster attacks on their turn... so a fighter is close up in a sword fight with a goblin, and the goblin decides to not attack the fighter, but attacks the MU standing 15’ away In stead ?
3- and not sure of the rules completely in 5E, but on a number of occasions the attack rolls were a natural 20, and there was no double dmg modifier. I asked about that after the first session, and the DM said there was, but forgot.

Hopefully she’ll get there. Still having fun bonding with my daughter.

I've played D&D once or twice
I've played a lot Warhammer fantasy role-play back in the day as GM
Some Star Wars
But I think that my preferred game as a player was Cthulhu

I haven't played since 10 years I think, but I still doing LARP
Last month we wen with my 2 daughters north of Germany to participate to Conquest of Mythodea, I guess we where close to 10,000 players

I am usually DMing a D&D game every Thursday with my friends for the past 2.5 years.
Recently, we have put my campaign on hold so someone else could try DMing and this time we are playing PathFinder.
