Great first game at the new place. Started night with an hour of 2/4 Stud8, then an hour of 2/4 O8. Both with half kill. Then moved on to about 6 hours of 25c/50c NLHE. I was even after the limit games. I was up $432 at the end of the night... and my AAAKK held up for high hand. AS chips in play.

I busted last night's tourney in the middle of the pack, then ran well and played mostly well in the .25/.50 cash game afterwards. My one big mistake of the evening was shoving AK into semi-obvious AA on an 8-high flop when I could have just check-folded and saved $40.

In spite of that blunder, I had my best session (big blind-wise) in a long time. In for $140, out for $545 (+810bb) over about 5 hours.

I too busted this week in the middle of the pack (10th out of 18 players)... Flopped a set and had my all-in reraise called by player with a combo draw, who hit his straight on the turn and flush on the river... Pics below of the table set-ups. The first is my dining room table with a removable topper (Solarium over closed-cell foam). This table plays better with 8, but can fit 9 in a pinch. The other pics are of my experimental “super-elliptical” table, intended to improve sightlines. The rail is a bit lumpy, but not a terrible job for my first try...

I like the look of that super-elliptical, what do your players have to say about it compared to a standard oval?

I can't wait for this. The only thing my 8 year old ever wants to play is guts and we can't play for money because he literally has none. He does like it though, so the seeds are planted!

My son just turned 8 and I'm teaching him how to play. He's got the basics down... Not much strategy yet but that will come.

No negative reactions... A half-dozen positive ones... But mostly silence. Many of the guys just want to play cards (and are used to playing on much worse tables with dice chips in other home games around here, so everything is an upgrade). I’ll try to tease out more comments in future games.

I like the ellipse table, I used to have one, but it was actually to big and made moving cards and chips in the middle difficult.

Did you use the same material for the rail and the playing surface?

Same material, yes. It’s a durable, waterproof material made for outdoor seating which I found at a store, after trying out various others. Very pleased with the way it feels and plays.

I made the table about 8” shorter than my previous stadium shaped table, and the same width. With the tighter curve, it is a much easier reach.

Assuming a stadium-shaped table and an ellipsoid table have the same width and length, it should be physically impossible for it to be harder to move cards/chips on the ellipsoid table, as the shape would fit inside the stadium-shaped one... The distances to reach would be the same or shorter from every seat, per the (clumsy) graphic below... The pink areas are parts of the stadium table which are farther from the center than on the ellipsoid one. So yours must have been longer and/or wider than usual.

I finally was able to get get my Limit set into play last night. It was a 4 handed game that went until 3:45 this morning.

I was pickle in the middle ending up with second best both ways in several very large pots. I lost $300 or so, but it was a fun night and looking forward to doing it again.

The bottle of Bourbon was full when we started at 7pm!

My son is 25 and plays regularly with us and I hate it. I can't stand being at the table with him because I can't stand taking his chips and seeing him disappointed. I know it is the game but last night he was sitting to my right and several times I would have normally raised the action but since he was in i didn't. I know it shouldn't affect my play and he is an adult , but it does. Probably always will.

If that's seriously how you feel, then you should refuse to play with him at all. Soft-playing is cheating and unfair to the other players at the table.

Try coaching him and teaching him about bankroll management. When you have a tonne of buyins in your wallet, loses tend to hurt less.

I understand what you are saying and I wouldn't condone cheating but it is hard for me to throw out a big bluff when it is just him and I in a pot. If others would consider that cheating then so-be-it.
Now if there are others in the pot all bets are off, and i'm not saying I wouldn't bluff or raise or any of that, just saying it carries a different feeling.

Carry on with the "Home Game pr0n" .......

Haha, I guess I may be ruthless, but there are some games I will never soft play against my kids. Poker and Chess are included. I figure when he's 25 and we're playing, he will have owed me more than a few buy-ins at that point anyway  :ROFLMAO:

What chips are those?

Mmmm, I love me some Bulleit bourbon.

It is my Mardi Gras/River Boat BCC mixed set. They have the same edge spots but a different but similar inlay. The set looks like a sister casinos chip mixed together.

Nice, my chip game must be getting better cause my first guess was Mardi Gras and 2nd guess was River Boats.

I don't want this to seem like I'm picking on you, but seriously -- if you can't play against him heads-up like you would any other player, then just don't play -- it's an easy decision that solves the problem. You're not doing your son any favors by soft-playing against him, and you are setting a really bad example.

It's unethical behavior, and the no soft-play rule with penalties for doing so if caught is in every poker rule book I've ever seen, and for good reason. The fact that it's hard for you to do so, or makes you feel bad when you do really doesn't change anything. It's just wrong, and a violation of poker rules and etiquette.
