Short story:
Crappy chips but a great time. Cut the Professor's game up, used the bridge KEMs I brought which they liked, wooo! 5 card draw/stud, 7card roll your own, hold em, great time.

In for $50+20
Out for $271

Stream of thoughts below.

Some awkwardness and I think I was out of line later on. I was on edge for a lot of it, the next best player brought his buddy and they both made a point of sitting directly to my left and mentioned they had talked about me on the way. Usually would be lighthearted but I was iffy on him previously, kind of angle-y. He was shuffling while looking at the bottom cards, then straight up just start sifting through the deck while on break while it was just him and his buddy and me. I made sure they knew I was watching and it got washed. Buddy kept telling me he wasn't cheating.

This game also has a policy that cash plays on the table and no more chips are bought from the bank, only other players. Theres one player in particular who is known to be weird about this, he'll put $300 down if hes down $20 bucks but put it under his phone. No one else seems to care but its sketchy. Consensus at the old man table was that I only needed to know how much it was after he went all-in. So I could be playing against a stack of $30 or a stack of $300 and that information wasn't pertinent until I risked it all. We weren't arguing but I was pointing out the problem in doing it this way and the host didn't seem to care, so oh well. $50 cap game becomes awkwardly mystery deep-stacked.

That same grumpy guy who has slowrolled before got his river bet called and wouldnt show, waiting for the new guy to show his hand; I asked him to show since I was dealing, he said no but I flipped them once the new guy showed and he mucked. I was out of line and shouldn't have but hes frustrated me before making people show first when its on him, new people just dont know better. Apologized in front of everyone then again away from the table, I was just on edge from the duo/weird shuffle/cash discussion. I regretted it immediately.

Night ended well a few hours later. Awkward moment at the end, I catch a full house drawing 3 to my Kings against the host for a good pot, then had someone shove against my aces full not noticing the $80 in cash I had earned on the table. THIS IS WHY GAMES SHOULD HAVE CLEAR RULES!!!! Always kepy my cash fanned out in clear view. But obviously I was happy and I barely needed the cash, had him almost covered in chips and I wasn't going anywhere.

Not nearly angry enough. Wars have been started over less. I want cards thrown, table overturned kind of rage.

Which part, me flipping his cards? He's done it to me before too but I just chose the wrong moment, I feel bad. He's the type that would drive most hosts/dealers here crazy but the house rules are king.

About every other month I play in a tournament at this guys house where the rules are out the window. There's string betting, cards being taken off the table, sometimes going under the table, high denom chips hidden behind the lower denoms, betting out of turn, folding out of turn, the host not paying attention to the clock, change being made from one blind to the next and it goes on and on. The worst part is that I'm met with resistance when I point these things out. There's one player who claims she plays in tournaments in casinos yet she completely covers her cards with her hands in front of her. There's no way she's getting away with that in a casino and when I tell her she gets huffy. I'm sure she knows and is really just angling because she also hides her higher denoms which also wouldnt fly in a casino. It's a complete shit show and I've gotten into some heated arguments and wanted to flip the table but it's one of the few local games I've found so I reluctantly go back lol. The chips are good because I bring them ;) but so far nothing pricey.

Two posts in one page about games with vague rules.

This might have been acceptable 20 years ago, but now that I know the angles, there is no way I would return to a game like that. Rules aren't there for shits and giggles, they are there to protect the players by keeping the game fair.

Playing in a game with loosy-goosy rules is like driving without a seatbelt. You'll be fine until something goes wrong.

You're exactly right and this was my point when I was pushing on the cash issue. One of the players said that it would only be a problem such a small amount of the time so don't worry about it. This is the same guy who talks about bad beats and how he's so unlucky. Can't connect the dots!

Personally, its been great for my bankroll and it doesn't require me to host, so I'm going to continue playing and voicing my concerns as they happen. Host is very well meaning but he has no idea why position at the table matters or why you'd want more or less cash on the table, so some of his older friends lean him one way or the other.

So many cooks in the kitchen. I'm dealing and watching all the blinds: same old guy asks who its on every hand and its always him. Then he says wait a minute and says we're short an ante, slowly counts every chip, then limps for his 50cents. Then two other players discuss the pot being right or not and a few hours in I just let them do it. It does get exhausting.

Those chips are assume, great choice. They always look great and can be used in any situation and for that environment, the cost of those chips is paramount.

As for the play style - well that can be poker, it doest make it right, or preferred, one can only live through the experience or change the experience (if possible), experience tells me that change will not be possible...but at least you know what you are getting into, and realization along with acceptance is half the battle, the other half exists on the felt.

Good Luck.

Unfortunately I stumbled on a local game that is a group of friends that play poker and not a group of poker players that are friends. The worst part is almost none of them wants to improve. If the host would tighten things up they'd follow but he's already backed a player who wouldn't give me an exact all in count. I kept getting "she has about $12k" and when I persisted to know exactly he said "what more do you want it's about $12k" so I folded and tossed away :as::qs: face up and he said "Oh, you weren't gonna call with that anyway".

These games sound awful... @chippitydoodah & @NotRealNameNoSir you guys are some real troopers, I don't think I could manage playing, trying to suggest playing the game correctly, putting up with other player's shitty attitudes, angling, dealing and even supplying cards and chips but I guess it helps they aren't very good so it's profitable it just sounds miserable.

I think the word you're searching for is degenerates

I getcha, but I definitely dont mean to sound like a martyr. The guys seem like great people, always a lot of fun and a good variety of games. They have their stubborn ways which frustrate me but I make a good amount from it, plus I dont have to teach anyone how to play. Back home I'm teaching beginners and want to go easy, not so much at this game where they've been playing longer than I've been alive and have orders of magnitude more wealth lol.

Turnout of around 70 people today for a $200 freeroll. Didn't use the tiger chips because lots of people from the sponsoring club that I didnt know, we used phoenix chips instead. Half the room is pictured.

20k starting stack. As the host at 300/600 I jammed ~23k in a table of 6 preflop with A9diamond got called by QQ lol lifes tough.

We saw the 2nd nut flush get beat by Straight Flush (AK flush vs the 8-high straight flush) and quads lol. Was a roudy night.

Aw man, don't think I could do it and play there. Is fine until it isn't and then gets ugly. You run your own game too, right? If not, you could run it right and bring some of those players in?
