Is it day-drinking if you start at 4pm?

I’m super stoked, we just booked our flights for Scotland/Ireland this summer. Staying a week in the dead center of the Speyside region at a house with all of my wife’s family, not gonna make it to Islay, but will be doing copious tours and tastings!

That sounds like a lovely time, Kyle! I never made my way to Scotland myself but this trip is definitely on my priority list. I hope you guys have a blast there!

I just washed all my glassware. I'm feeling thirsty. I was making fun of a neighbor who was shoveling snow, told him he looked thirsty, then he garbled back with something about "dry January" and now we're not friends anymore.

NICE! I've never had the Clynelish, how is it? Have you gotten a chance at the Laga 11 Offerman - Guinness? They don't stock it around here and I'm not willing to ship it given it could just randomly turn up some day on the VA ABC catalog.

I can bring you a pour of clynelish 14. Also of the hogshead cask strength I ordered

Clynelish is excellent for when you're in the mood for something on the lighter end of the spectrum. Pretty complex for the price point - starts with just a bit of smoke mixed with citrus/zest notes, then some brine & spice kicks in and finishes with almost a lemony bite, really interesting. The Laga Offerman (Guinness) is also fantastic but very different, tons of peat and a flavor bomb, and the Guinness finish gives it a rich, almost creamy texture on the finish.

Back today from an 11-day cruise in the western Caribbean. Just as we sailed, two of our ship's scheduled ports were canceled for all cruise ships-- San Juan and St. John's, both US territories. Major bummer, as we were looking forward to visiting San Juan again. St. Kitts really isn't much (though we had a lunch of the best grouper we've ever tasted).

So that left it all up to our favorite eastern Caribbean stop, St. Martin's French side. Despite the very disappointing pace of recovery from the last hurricane disaster, our favorite wine store has relocated to a new building near the ferry port, and came through for us big time with two bottles:

It didn't hurt that after we made the purchase for about $260 (the shop stocks two dozen vintages, dating back to the 1920s, most of which are priced like cars), the owner started serving us complimentary pours. Thank heaven we'd already had lunch!

Interestingly, when we got home, I discovered that I already had a bottle of the 1990:

You'll notice that our older bottle on the left, bottled in 2009, is considerably darker than the newer bottle from 2017. Tasting these two together is going to be interesting...
