What about actual cards? I haven't seen any custom cards yet. I tried but failed as I suck at graphics.
Like 'real-life' custom cards? I have been looking for a place to have some made but all the places that I have found look like they just make the cheap cards...

No no; like custom cards for Poker Mavens. Not just the card backs, but the fronts too.

I know that @CraigT78 had some made for his site and they look GOOD and easier to see. I have been trying to think of a design for mine but havent come up with anythig yet...

So that's kinda what I was going for; the giant suit next to the value. But I got hung up on face cards; I didn't like just having a big ass "K" or "Q".

I thought this too, at first. Once I started playing on other servers, I missed my cards.
Did you contact a local artist on PCF to make the new cards for you? Do you happen to have a screenshot showing what a face cards look like?

Bigger plaid pattern, bigger logo. As much as I want to make real-life poker accessories look good, it's too low of a resolution.

These cards look great! Did you make them yourself? Your cards got me thinking about paying to have green plaid themed cards made with my four-leafed clover that we kind of use as our logo on them.

Yeah I just did it myself. If you want to use the same pattern converted to green and have your logo ready, shoot me a PM.

Anyone playing on PPPoker?
My neighborhood home game moved to PPPoker since April. We've been using that along with zoom so we get the face to face component and we get to chat with each other. Not as good as the real thing, but it's as close as we can get until everything gets better.

So if I seriously wanted to set up one of these online home games for my family and friends, How much effort is involved (for a basic setup, not all the bells and whistles right out of the gate) and how much cost? Would it be stupid if I only wanted to run 2-3 games a week?

Amazon is free for about a year. Poker Mavens costs $40 at its most basic. There's really not much in terms of cost beyond that. If you really don't care about it, you can skip securing your site with encryption and skip the whole domain name thing and just use an IP address.

So it really boils down to 40 bucks and a little bit of time. You can get a site up and running in a few hours for the most part.

Not much effort.
Basic setup took about an hour for me, because I spent a lot of time testing connections (hosting from my home comp, and didn't want it to fail miserably.)
$40 for the lite version: 2 tables max (1 cash 1 tourney) at a time
$150 for the pro version: Virtually unlimited tables, lots of tweaking as far as table design, chips, cards, etc.

I have the pro version. I host about once a week. It has been totally worth it.

Yeah, just realized I forgot to ask one question, but you answered it - sorta. It sounds like from all I've read that Poker Mavens is the best. I've been lurking here for a while, but just now decided I'm really interested. If it's only $40, and is good, and I can get fancy later if I want to, then I would probably go that route.

Yeah, I think lite would work to start out. I'm thinking a PLO cash game one week night, a NLHE cash game another week night, and a tournament on the weekend. I assume I can always upgrade to pro down the road if it takes off.

I'm going to start going back through this thread looking for any valuable pointers, unless anyone can direct me to a specific post or page to start.

I would absolutely go with Poker Mavens. The only downside to the $40 license is that you're limited to single tables. And at that you're also limited to one cash game and 1 Tournament.

So if you wanted to run any type of multi-table or you wanted to have more than just one of each type ready to roll then you need to go up to the $150 license.

here are some links that I posted earlier that help people set up and get AWS working:

The posts around this time are also very helpful so it's a good place to start.

Wait. So even the 1 tournament is limited to only one table? That's pretty severe. I'm absolutely OK with one cash table at a time, but I would anticipate that a tournament might exceed one table...

Yep, once we were convinced that Poker Mavens was right for us we upgraded from the basic license to the pro license to get essentially unlimited tables in a single tournament.

That sounds like a great idea. Run the Lite version to begin with, just in case you don't get the amount of play you think you will.

I'm at the software site now. Another difference is when I go pro I can take a small rake to help offset the additional cost. Looks like that is not available in Lite, correct? I assume I can customize the rake if I want it to be really small. This is a group of friends and family, so I'm not looking at this as a second income. But a little cash flow in to offset license costs and time and effort seems reasonable. Do most people who run these take at least some rake?

If you want to take Poker Mavens for a spin, you can also try it out at Faded Spade Virtual card room. They set up reserved private ring games or a Sit n Go tournament setup for $20 per month (or if you have a slightly larger group, you can do up to 20 at a Sit n Go setup for $40). No need to set up a virtual server or install things, and you a modest investment to try it out.

It's how my group found it for the first time and once we knew we liked it, then we did the work of finding a virtual host, paying for the Pro license, and stepping up to our own full setup.

Now we have multiple ring games available (including mixed games), a weekly tournament, a sit 'n go ready to go, etc. We've done bounty tournaments, satellites through a built in ticket system. It's slick.

But honestly we might not have plunked down for all that if we did not try it out first.

We do not rake. At some point every player has thrown me $20 and that has more than covered our hosting and licensing costs for the 8 months to date. You might try that kind of "yearly dues" or something similar.
