I have been contacted by the wife of a one of my friends who I play poker with. She wants to try to get him a set of nice clay chips for his 50th birthday. The budget would be pretty generous, say $2k or even a little more for a 1000 chip set appropriate for 1/2 or 2/5 Hold'em. Say 1-200 x $1s, a bunch of $5s, and enough $25s and $100s to boost the bank to at least $10k (but $15k+ would be better, the games can get pretty active).

I've pretty much been out of the poker chip market for a while other than the odd rack to fill out a set. I know customs have always taken a long time, and she only has just over a month. I thought about Key West chips, but Josh tells me that it's 6-12 months for this kind of set. Casino chips would appear to be the way to go, but sets this size and makeup are not always (or usually) available. You have to watch the market and seize the opportunity if it arrises.

She could always get him a gift certificate or something from CPC, but it would be a while (6+ months) before he got chips. What I need is a good ChipRoom sale.

So can anybody who has been more active buying than I have been make a suggestion? Anybody got a nice set that they want to sell?

I'm not sure I really want to sell, but check out the Even Stevens set I have linked in my signature. If his name is Steve they would be perfect. All chips are mint. Total bank $12,900.

You should contact Dennis at Key West to see if he can help you or verify that..
Also, if you are not picky about which mold, You may be possibly be able to get custom CPC chips within 60-90 days email CPC...

My bad. I said Josh but meant Dennis. He told me a year before the $5 and $100 Key West chips will be back in stock.

Not Steve but a nice set that would certainly work. LMK if you are interested. Obviously, I would then have to run it by his wife...

Just now boarding flight to Vegas. Depending on how I run, I might be in a buying or selling mood. I will let you know when I return.

Apache has several Paulson sets for sale. Custom ceramics could be ordered/delivered by then. If wanting to build a mixed-casino set, I may be able to help you out.

I've been thinking of selling my Paulson Classic set, about 950 chips, sent you a message on the breakdown if you're interested. But personally, I would try and get a mixed-casino set with the help of @BGinGA. He has excellent taste when it comes to chips.

Sell some Marilyn's. Wait, that's crazy talk! :p

Thanks for the suggestions. Except for k9dr's Even Stevens, none of these sets is quite right, mostly with regard to distribution. I am now considering selling him one of my "extra" sets, if I can find a reasonable price. Even though I have more nice sets than anybody could reasonably need, this is still a little like selling your children.

Options include:

$2x100, $5x700, $25x100, $100x80, $500x20

Sell some Marilyn's. Wait, that's crazy talk! :p
Funny you should mention it:

Partial set: $1x200, $5x 500, $25x20, $100x80

$1x400, $5x450, $25x200, $100x50

What would these sets be worth on the open market today? For a sale between friends, not looking for maximal profit.
Please note that this is NOT a general offer to sell any of these sets. This would be for a local sale where I have visitation rights.

PS No price needed for the Grand Casinos. Not selling those. If only the $5s were less worn, they might be the perfect cash casino set. How did they not get into the voting on Butler's contest?

the only set of those three that i would even consider letting go would be the casablanca's. #whyisthisevenaquestion ;)

This would leave me with 2400+ Marilyn's. And when I was taking the pic of the Grand's, I knew that wasn't happening.

Depends on the friend. :p $1.50/chip? And yes, hang onto those Grand Casinos...don't think I've ever seen minty $5's in those.

Don't sell that Marilyn's set... To him. My 40th is coming up this month. I could use them, and they belong out here in Washington. She feels homesick, send her back home! ;)

Love how this has now become open season for offers for all YOUR chips :D

What about Stardust Mansions?

Just skip the $25 chips and use $100. You'll have plenty of $5s in play by then, and you'll have more consolidation by using the $100 without a $25.

Not selling those. Just dropped a bundle for more $25s and $100s. Nope. No way.

Actually Leonard, I have a set of Surfside Ceramics that may work!

300 - $1
800 - $5
300 - $25
20 - $100
10 - $500

What kind of set does your friend have now? Have you contacted CPC about getting a set?

We played last night at my house. I think he's pretty set on Paulson clays, although I could see him changing his mind for some CPC customs. I don't think he really cares for ceramics. I think I've spoiled him. We play with my chips and he thinks those sets are easy to come by...

Casablanca Casino is probably your best bet. If he needs $1 chips (vs your set's $2s), have @Gear whip up a rack or two of nice $1 chips with an inlay replacement that matches. Also easiest to add-on if he needs expansion later.
