I did and I loved it. It will probably be in my top ten for the year.

I completely agree. Anyone that is a fan of horror/suspense flicks that likes something a little different should absolutely watch this.

The Revenant

Just finished it a few minutes ago. Excellent movie. Its 2.5 hours long. The two main guys, Lenardo D and Tom Hardy both nail their performances. Since its not out yet I won't discuss the movie. I really enjoyed it. The animal attack scene might be one of the best I've scene. They are usually done with horrible cgi. This one is not. There are a few predictable moments in it. That is fine.

Glad you enjoyed it, but I think you're doing yourself a disservice watching it on the small screen for the first time.

Just an FYI to anyone wanting to go see The Hateful Eight in theaters, be aware that there are two versions: a standard and a "Roadshow" version, which is the branding used by Tarantino to denote his longer cut (though otherwise it is not a traditional roadshow version in the classic sense). I'm not sure that he calls it the Director's Cut, but it lasts an additional 20 minutes (standard is 167 minutes with the "Roadshow" being 187). There's evidently an intermission and some of the sequences are cut substantially differently in the longer version.

I'll be seeing the "Roadshow" version, but I can certainly see not caring for another 20 minutes of an already near three-hour movie.

I don't think I'm going to be able to bring myself to see Joy in the theater. I'm just not interested. I already bitched enough about it, but I don't think I can take sitting through two hours of Jennifer Lawrence.

I don't think you could pay me to see the Danish Girl. Eddie Redmayne is annoying as hell and this movie jams together two of the film establishment's cream dreams: historical biopics and social issue dramas. You can see in the previews how completely besotted they are with their own generosity toward a trans woman. We get it, trans issues are the new civil rights cause; I'm on board. Just stop making hamfisted shit films to make your point.

Not a huge fan of the Theater. The large crowds of assholes that use their phone, talk, ect.... during a movie drives me crazy. Has caused a confrontation once and a dude got tossed.

Movie budget and available time to hit the movies are minimal.

I definitely can see where it would be impressive. The filming was very well done.

Watched Sicario last night. Jake and I both really liked it. The acting was stellar.

We have Sicario to watch. Hope to check it out before the weekend...

Just a quick word as I don't have time for much more. I saw Carol on xmas and the Hateful Eight yesterday.

The Hateful Eight screened in 70mm with an overture and an intermission and with no previews. Anyone who cares to see the movie should do everything reasonably possible to see it in 70mm with the roadshow format. Probably tied with A Force Awakens for my most enjoyable moviegoing experience of the year, though neither of those movies will appear in my top ten.

The Hateful Eight was very good and very funny, but at least on first watch didn't take hold of me like Tarantino's last two movies. I can't wait to hear all the morons arguing about the racism and misogyny in the movie, though. There's plenty for those types of idiots to glom onto if they want to bitch, but they will be totally wrong. Great in parts and on the cusp of greatness overall but it doesn't quite show QT's potential imo. Would still be a HUGE mistake to miss in 70mm. Plus you get a sweet big movie program like in the old days as well.

Carol I almost didn't even see. My mom wanted to go see Star Wars on xmas, but we didn't know when we'd be finished at my mother-in-law's so we didn't have tickets in advance and of course it was sold out by the last showtime of the night. I kind of pushed Carol on her as it was the only thing at the theater that I hadn't seen and wanted to catch.

I didn't expect it to blow me away as it did, though. Cate Blanchett was very good (and her performance complex in a way that I can tell I will be unpacking it further on multiple watches), but Rooney Mara was stunning. And the direction was magnificent. I had heard/read it ended up being a little lifeless due to Todd Haynes's preoccupation with the set and costume design, but that was way off the mark imo. So many notable sequences that show how thoroughly Haynes understands how to tell the narrative story in a purely visual way. I don't see how this won't make my top ten.

Going to the 10:30pm showing tonight and can't wait. It's a 90 minute drive to the theater which means I won't get home until after 3am but I'm just happy it's showing anywhere within reasonable driving distance

Hope you have as much fun as I did. Be sure not to be late - no previews.

Thanks! Oh, I won't be late... it's sold out. I'll be there 45 minutes or more ahead of time to get a decent seat.

Watching in 70mm was awesome. Highly recommend to anyone who has a reasonable opportunity.

Per the movie itself i felt exactly like I did with all QT movies except Pulp and Billv1, I liked it/didn't love it. I love QT but for whatever reason his films don't completely grab me until I've watched them multiple times. The exceptions were Kill Bill v1 which I loved immediately and Pulp Fiction which I thought was trash (and became my favorite movie for about as long as I remember)

I haven't see Hateful 8 yet. I mostly agree with this. Even Kill Bill V1 took a couple of showings before it truly hooked me. Now its right up there with Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs as some of my favorite movies.

Maybe I'll try and watch it this weekend.

Those of you lucky enough to still have their lives, take them with you! However, leave the limbs you've lost. They belong to me now...except you Sofie! You stay exactly where you are.

I thought the theater-going experience was a lot like opening night of Star Wars: only people who truly wanted to see the movie were there and they were completely enraptured. There was chatter or distraction and everyone seemed to "get" what was happening on screen.

As to the actual movie, like you I will be seeing it again, but in some ways the script falls apart a bit in the last ten minutes. I would love to see it reveal itself to be smarter or more dynamic on a second watch, but even if it's not, I will very rarely knock a movie's rating down too much if I love all of it but the end as is the case here.

As for Tarantino's other movies, I adored his first three and Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained on first viewing. I think Death Proof is good, but not great (though I've only seen it once and have been encouraged by friends to give it second and third viewings). And I still think both volumes of Kill Bill are overrated. I would rank his best to worst as:

Django Unchained
Inglourious Basterds
Reservoir Dogs
Pulp Fiction
Jackie Brown
Hateful Eight
Death Proof
Kill Bill, vol. I
Kill Bill, vol. II

Haven't seen The Hateful Eight yet, but that's ^^ about how I would rank 'em.

Just got back from the roadshow format of The Hateful Eight. It really was a cool format, I definitely recommend it.

If we're doing writing also we've gotta do True Romance and Natural Born Killers as well. I would put both ahead of both Kill Bills.

Watched "Experimenter" last night. Interesting. I liked it. Pulled from IMDB.com. 1961, social psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted the "obedience experiments" at Yale University. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3726704/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

I found the social experiments interesting. If you don't like it when the main character talks into the camera then you won't like this movie. He does it a lot. I don't mind it if its done well. The movie runs for 1.4 hrs.

One movie that I did not catch in theaters but did watch recently on, appropriately, Cinemax on demand (not sure if it's on Netflix now) is the Boy Next Door with Jennifer Lopez. It's absolutely a candidate for MST3K style watching, but also actually has something of an interesting pseudo-thriller storyline and, naturally, it has Jennifer Lopez.

By far the most absurdly "are they serious with this shit?" scene is when Jennifer Lopez - who plays an English teacher in the movie - receives a copy of the Iliad from an obsessed student and responds, "Oh my god, this is a first edition!" Face, meet palm.
