Pirate Gold Poker (5 Viewers)

I dunno, I’ll pass. Pretty funny pic on their site, playing on a glass table. That’ll work  :ROFLMAO:

Playing with metal 23g chips on glass is just begging to break the table also *shudders* at the sound of these on a glass table.

These look like AWFUL poker chips, but would be cool as bounties or something

That's what I was thinking! There is definitely something here

These look neat enough to be an okay impulse buy, except their own website has conflicting info (different weights listed for the same coins in different spots), and annoying quantities that aren't actually customizable.

I emailed them asking more about the materials involved. They're probably something like electroplated pewter, which could affect the colored finish with regular use.

I just received my “free” Pirate Gold chips. Well, free except for the $8 s/h fees.

The coins are terribly loud together. There is a ton of intricate design details on the chips that will get clogged with food from grubby fingers. The gold is not a shiny gold, nor is the silver. The edges are rounded and the silver ones are thinner. You could probably get 125 in a standard rack.

They are inferior to the traditional poker chips in so many ways. So I’m only going to order the 180 piece set for 2 bills. I mean, c’mon! It’s freakin’ pirate coins. Perfect for two tables of 10 for bounty chips or rebuy markers. I need help….

I would never think of replacing my paulsons with metal pirate coins. What it looks like in the ad is they are not only different sizes but some have a huge hole in the middle! Could be fun for a pirate themed poker party and use these as bounty chips. I’ll definitely be using the Kraken chip for a dealer button.

Definitely very ambitious for this company but no too many people are going to pay that kind of money for a chip set.

People STILL buy brand new dice chips. Like only 0.001% of the population know what good poker chips are.
To the rest of the world they are just convenient gifts at an acceptable price point.

Just got my sample set in an all I can say is WOW!!!

Where do I start…

First I opened the coins which came in packs of two

The coins are cheap metal and don’t stack well. It’s difficult to grab the bottom coin because of how thin they are compared to regular chips. They look like shit.

Next were the cards…

The cards are on par with Bicycle paper cards and only come in poker size. They look like a souvenir from the Indiana Jones Ride at Disneyland. They are shit.

Lastly there’s the Kraken dealer button which is what I most excited for but ended up being the biggest let down of this entire set.

When it comes to buttons, the bigger the better in my humble opinion. If you’re going to make a dealer button shaped after the classic mythological sea titan, at least make it substantial. This thing is a little bit bigger than a standard size poker chip. It’s not impressing anyone. It has no weight and feels more cheap than the coins. In fact I’m sure I could break it in half with little effort. It looks like shit just like everything else.

All in all, I give this sample set a 2/10. Awful set I would not recommend even for bounty chips. I wouldn’t even recommend getting these if you were offered them for free. Always, always, always get samples.

I appreciate the review as well as your optimism. But these seemed like a sure thing to be garbage.

Another issue I noticed after getting the set, is that the card backs are the design on the box. So, as was discussed in a thread where someone was looking to make their own cards, the back is not a mirror image, so one turned the opposite way could indicate what that card is. Oh well, the pirate set had the possibility of being something cool, but the execution is lacking. They should have come to PCF to get feedback before they went to market...we could have made this set epic...

Thanks for taking a hit for the team.

Im sure we can all appreciate a company trying to make cool poker chips. Unfortunately, people are going to spend their money on dice chips before spending a ton on thin, metal coins.

I just ordered the samples before I saw this thread. I definitely won’t be getting a set. This is a great idea, but looks like the execution and quality is horrible

Thanks for this post. I'm sure you saved quite a few peoples money. That button is pretty disappointing.. if it were much bigger I'd definitely pick it up.

I got some. Dunno if they have refined them or not. Tldr , they are terrible poker chips for anything outside of theatrilical production. For game tokens they are probably pretty great, despite being extremely over priced.

Seems like an old thread that is still going, but just my input. I actually played a game with these, a local low stakes weekly game switched up his theme to be pirate (I don't know if he's into pirate or did it just because of these chips) and moved venues to his apartment. Small .25/.50 game.

Anyway, showed up and he had these out. I honestly thought it would be cool at first, even if it is not my preference. It just ended up being annoying.

I play with non-denom chips all the time, and never have an issue. But with these I just would lose track. Some look too similar, the values are hard to be logical, and reaching for a stack was just odd. I figured that would be an issue and we just get used to it, I was mostly hoping the sound would make it "fun." Ultimately, while loud, didn't give any sort of satisfaction when raking in a pot or making a bet. Didn't feel like we were actually playing with coins and doubloons, I think they'd need to be smaller.

Just get chips. Even abs chips have a more satisfying sound, to me.

How hard were they to keep stacked?
