(Mods: If this should be somewhere else, please move it. I couldn't find anywhere obvious...)

One of my favorite things ever on CT was the circulating Grab Box. I have no idea where it ended up, but I thought it was fun.

So while going through and unboxing my collection, it occurred to me that we could re-start it here.

For those unfamiliar: We fill a box with everyone's extra poker goodies -- chips, cards, buttons, card guards, whatever, related to poker chips and home games. The box gets circulated among PCF members with more than, say, 100 posts. When you get the box, you take out what you want, and re-fill with whatever you can spare of comparable interest or value, re-pack it, and then pay the postage to forward the large FRB box on to the next PCFer on the list.

How I propose to start it:

- I'll be finding a hard case or box that will fit inside a large USPS flat rate box, and contributing toward the initial contents.

- PCFers interested in participating should send me whatever goodies or oddities you're willing to contribute toward the project. I'd suggest a minimum value of, say, $10. Include your PCF name with your package!

- In return for your contribution, I'll put your name on the initial list of recipients in post two of this thread, in order of receipt of your contributions.

- Once the box begins making the rounds, anyone else who wants to be added to the list can just shoot me a pm.

-While the box is making the rounds, each time someone receives and re-ships the box, your name will be re-added to the bottom of the list, unless you opt out of the list.

- I'm afraid this will have to be restricted to US addresses only, because of shipping considerations. But there's nothing to stop PCFers outside the US from starting something similar in their own regions or countries.

- The cut-off for initial contributions will be Saturday, April 30. That's 2-1/2 weeks --should be enough, no? I'll start the box on its way to the first recipient the following Monday.

- Discussion and pics can be posted here!

Anyone interested? Any suggestions for points I've overlooked?

Ship some goodies (without signature required) to:

Thanks for participating!

Sounds fun. I am in

Edit: withdrawn. I think I will sit out this first round. Cool idea! Just not sure what I want to contribute, or what treasures I would hope to find.

One suggestion might be that the value of each individual goodie package inside be equal to or greater than the cost of shipping the grab-bag box. A USPS medium flat rate box should be plenty big enough to contain a whole bunch of individual packages, and shipping a MFRB would put the target value at around $14 or greater.

Just a thought.... since it provides little incentive to pull and add a $10 goodie package if shipping costs are $19 for a LFRB....

I'm probably in as well ..
I was in rotation on the original CT box, ( "Tony Pap box " ) & I remember I may have been the last one to "ship it out" ... By time it had gotten to me, it was a heavy UPS'd box, filled mostly with slugged & plastic chips, used paper card decks, a bunch of old worn Poker magazines ( weight), Partial decks, scratched plastic trays and the like ..

While some will be tempted I would like to offer the suggestion of not taking photos and/or listing what you give and take every time someone new receives the box. Seems like it would be a lot more fun if the box shows up and you don't have the slightest clue whats inside.

I think listing (or posting pics) of your own takeaway is fine, but the current contents of the box should remain a mystery.

Hmm -- then how do we avoid that?

Maybe by making each donation a zip-loc bag, and making the rule that each person takes out one and only one bag and replaces it with his own?

And a medium FRB might indeed be better. Certainly, stuff like old magazines aren't desirable. I guess a poker book might be.

Thanks for all the suggestions Keep 'em coming!

I would say that someone shouldn't be "forced" to take an entire bag, if they, say, want only a couple of chips from that bag, & perhaps a deck of cards from another ....
All "goodies" should be mixed together, & the recipient should "add" a similar value to what he/she replaced ... Keeping in mind what's already in there ( does the box really need another barrel of slugged chips if 6 are already in there) ...
Also, The actual shipping method , of course, should be left up to the person shipping ( USPS, UPS ect ) .... The dimensions of the box should be able to vary from a FRB at the shipper's discretion, so that some books, trays, or a birdcage full of mint TRK's ( :) ) can be added ...,, & in many instances UPS may be around the same as a LFRB with more options as to size dimentions ....
There would, of course, be the understanding that if a recipient receives a 48 lb box full of magazines, books & slugged suit chips, he would be within his discretion to "cull" the weight / contents to what he's comfortable cost shipping...

For what it's worth, I don't agree with ANY of ^^that^^.

Upon receipt of the traveling box, just take a look at all of the bag options, and choose the one you like best. Replace it with your own bag, repack and reseal, and ship it to the next person on the list. Using a USPS priority mail flat rate box guarantees that the shipping costs are the same for all participants, and that all shipments are typically received within 3-4 days of mailing..

Allowing people to cherry-pick stuff from multiple bags is a guaranteed recipe for a quick downhill trek for the box contents and the demise of the whole project.

If everybody's bag is worth at least the 'predetermined amount' (whatever that is), then it will work out well for all. If there are items in two different bags that interest you, well, you get to pick only one, so choose wisely.

And anybody who thinks it's appropriate to add cheap slugged chips, used paper playing cards, and/or other relatively useless junk doesn't understand the concept of what's being discussed here. This isn't a way to get rid of your trash.

Maybe somebody should show an example of what they might contribute.

I really like this idea, but because of location, etc. Can't be part of it just yet. I hope this gets off the ground.

First thing that popped into my head was a new setup of plastic cards.

A barrel of Paulson chips might have fit the bill a year or two ago, but in today's market they might be worth closer to $100 than $15.

Sample sets (customs, commercial, or casino) are another 'baggie' that would have mass appeal and be in the general area regarding price.

Two or three custom dealer buttons.

Lots of options, I think. To start it off, people could just send Larry random stuff and let him put together the initial bags if needed. Sending pre-set bags would be okay, too.

I see your points, & can go along with this bag-for-bag method ..
... That old board box had no individual bags, just random packed items, & that may be one reason why it eventually degenerated into a box of "stuff" ...
Someone thought that his stack of worn Bluff & Card Player Magazines that were on the bathroom floor, were "worth" what he removed .... ( & I suppose they could have been) ...
** My current concerns ( let me know if there is no need for them):
There are already at least a dozen or more people "in" on this , with likely more to come ... Will a simple flat rate box either quickly not be able to hold all the bags, and/or "stop" someone from donating their interesting things? ( "Oh well, "Super System" ain't gonna fit in here, nor these 44mm chip trays ..") , does this seem a concern? Will we need 2 boxes , starting at different ends of the list?

We'll see on all these. I get home late tomorrow night, and we'll see what trickles in next week.

My thought for typical donations were in line with what Dave listed above.

And doing the bag thing should help keep some attractive items in the box, rather than having the first person or two take everything of value.

Another way to avoid that would be to have each recipient return the box to me for shipping to the next recipient, but I would hope that isn't necessary.

We'll see...

I plan to add an initial donation to the bag, but have no need for the box to ever come to me,just paying it forward a bit
