I went with rail. I have an octagon table with usually 7 players, but we've had a 8. Never a spill. Not sure if it matters, but I also have a race track. So, padded vinyl rail, with cup holders, Naugahyde track, then my speed cloth playing surface. I have whacked the top of my beer s few times, but it never spills and you adjust your motions accordingly. I don't feel trapped and no one has ever complained.

Sports drinks and mixed drinks could be an issue. No one in our crowd drinks mixed drinks. It's all beer, soda, but the sports drinks are an issue. As written above, I take the cup holder to thrift stores and will find glass for the sports drinks. Just haven't gotten around to it. I have to be honest, there are times I'd like a mixed drink, especially since I don't have to drive. HOWEVER, it would cost me a lot more than custom glasses....

Thinking about this, open glass is just asking for trouble. I'm going to look for glasses that fit cup holders and have lids. Most travel mugs are a tad large, but we'll see. Where my wife works, glasses without lids are nearly prohibited, especially in conference rooms. You adapt...

Naugahyde race track? That sounds interesting. Is it padded?

It is padded. I also added the fabric cord to, tie it in with the rest of the table. I just thought the seam looked better with the cord. The colors of the cord tie in with the cloth, as well as the chairs, which have subtle gold in them. Maybe I'm a bit OCD, but I don't like playing at tables where I can't stack my chips neatly in the track. Perhaps my next table top will have a slightly larger track, so we don't go east/west so much with the chips on large stacks.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. Get your a$$es to the nearest thrift store to solve your cup problems. I took mu cup holder with me and in less than 2 minutes, I found these. 8, yes they actually had the 8 i needed, of these glasses. At a glance, they almost look poker related, with the white and redish specs. They fit perfectly, no slop side to side. Aren't too tall and the best feature, the design is texture. It's like small stipples helping you hold on to the glass, keeping it form sliding in your hand. Also, I found two small Christmas thermos' for anyone who wants coffee. Wow. I just realized I have some real geezers at my table, who would like coffee at times! I confess, there are times when I'd like a coffee, as my girls tend to bake for us on poker night. Something about sugar cookies and Glenlivet that doesn't sit well...

$10 dollars, problem solved! In fact, there's a kid's thrift shop and maybe they have some cool kids thermos', like Batman!

I like that. Poker chips on a wood surface are like nails on a chalkboard to me. But a soft padded track seems very cool.

I'm very happy with it. When the table is redone, the track will remain and as I wrote above, I might make it a bit larger. The reality is you need more room for chips than cards. In fact, back to the original topic, it keep the drinks that much further from the cloth.

Quick question to all who use side under cup holders - what size holds a standard pint glass?

Thanks for the opinions everyone - I will be going with slide under for my build. Probably the jumbo stainless as I need them to fit pint glasses. Although I do like the the ones with the cut outs for coffee cups. Maybe I will get some of each. I had no idea people would be so passionate about cup holder options ;)

I have some slide under you can try next week. Pretty sure I have some pint glasses too

Awesome. I am building my list of supplies now and I am sure that I'll have questions for all in attendance. Can't wait to sample some pints in your cup holders (y)

I would think standard. I have jumbo and they fit for sure but so does a beer can in an big foam coozie too.

Small ones fit a beer bottle, can, bottle of water, Scotch glass perfectly fine. A pint glass fits, but only up to a point so I just use straight highball like glasses instead.

Thanks for the input, problem is I already have 30 pint glasses that I have acquired, some custom - so switching glasses is not really a viable option. I'll have to see how they work at the SQM next week and go from there. (y)

Thought about reviving this eternal debate.
I see in the poll results that, among people who want cup holders in/on their table anyway (70 people), 39 (or 55.7%) prefer them either ON the playing surface (ie slide under cups) or sunken IN the surface, rather than in the rail (44.3%).
What seems striking to me is that among the not-in-the-rail cup holder lovers, 34 out of 39 opt for the cups to stand on the surface (for the sake of indisputable flexibility, according to player numbers and positioning preferences) rather than for sinking them in the surface, where they would be safer and less intrusive, for this given location.

The times a drink is most likely to be knocked is while dealing or when pulling in chips. Both those actions have your hand very close to the table surface. Sinking a bottle or glass 3" isn't going to make it less of a target, it just changes what part of the bottle/glass you will hit. Being able to move it somewhere that you wont hit it will make it less of a target.

So to that end the debate can be put to rest.
  • Side tables are the least likely to see spills but largely inconvenient for smaller rooms or for players that cannot twist easily.
  • Slide unders allow for placement to personal preferences thus greatly reducing spills. They also allow for flexibility when seating different numbers of players.
  • In rail or in table look nice, but dictate seating positions. They see the greatest number of knock overs.
As best I can tell, nearly every cardroom has side tables available if the room is big enough. Many have slide unders available. A few put them in the rail. Next to none have them in the table. Learn from their experience. Learn from the collective's experience (the poll). If you really need to, make your own mistakes.

No need to revive the debate though.

@Poker Zombie
I appreciate your taking the time to contribute very useful and detailed explanations.
Sorry for using the word "debate" if it upset you - it may have too negative connotations in English, of which I am not aware, as a non-native speaker.

Not a problem, not upset. Your question was a good one.

People will have differing opinions as to what is best. Once they have spent time and money on one or the other, they have a hard time changing their mind, because they have a vested interest that their table/cupholder choice was the best, and they try to convince themselves by convincing others.

I simply wanted to cut off the opinion debate before it ramped up with the pros and cons in a simple paragraph.
