Hi y'all, have a question about an old practice I heard from my grandfather.

I was recently talking to my grandfather who played poker some 30 years ago with friends and he talked about something they did that I at least can't figure out what it is called if it is common. They just played small social games, with a capped rase at $1 (about $3.5 now) so nothing was really meant for the big bucks.

His group of friends would take a rake from large pots equal to one big blind, for them 25c for pots larger than $2 (this was a while ago so 25c is basically $1 inflation adjusted) and this rake would all go into a cup they kept on the table. At the end of the night they would play one final hand where everyone was dealt 5 cards face up the person with the best hand (needed better than two of a kind) got the pot, if no one got a high enough hand they would run it again. He said it did relatively well with keeping people relatively happy and to stay the whole night in their social games as even people who where quite down over the night had the ability to win a big pot at the end without any benefit based on number of chips.

I have no idea if this is a good idea but would like to hear what you guys think about this kind of an idea?
I was thinking about doing this at a low stakes .25/.25 game I am hosting with some classmates and just wanted to hear what you guys think?

Thank you so much for your advice!

I don't love it. There are better ways to encourage people to stay and win a little jackpot.

For instance dropping 25¢ off some big enough pots into a high hand bonus or bad beat jackpot that pays out at the end or at a pre determined time.

In my game, I don't take any rakes/drops at all but I do round down people to the nearest 5 when they cash out. Whoever is still there when the game breaks is dealt in for a hand of thermonuclear Armageddon pineapple for all the roundoff. It can be anywhere from $5-$30.

I wanted to hate the idea. But the incentive to stick around for the last hand, combined with the chance of winning back a buyin for free? It sounds like a great idea.
Ya that was kind of my first impression too, I generally don’t like rakes in home games but if the host (me) doesn’t take any and it’s back to the players it feels less bad.

Traditionally it’s every hour or so to get the money in the game, moving around etc. I still like the idea to save some for the end of the night tho!

I like the basic idea.... take a small rake, for a larger late night pot that helps people stay late.
My first thought is 50c from pots over $25 goes to the prizepool.
The prizepool goes to a natural 4of a kind. Then at midnight, we run a hand with the pig prizepool left. 2 pair or better needed to win in.

I'll keep toying with the idea.

I've never done this myself, but a long time ago I played in a .25/.50 $20 max game that raked a SB from every hand and used it to fund a nightly high hand jackpot. It did help keep players there later, and most nights it ended up being $30+.

I think I prefer the end of evening flip though - gives everyone an incentive to stay to the end.
