I'm looking for ideas on how to get enough players to sustain a monthly Fixed Limit game. My current game has 6 players I can get regularly (the max I can accommodate too), but rarely at the same time.

My plan is to send out invites to friends/coworkers that I haven't played or discussed poker with before (not looking for randoms I don't know).

How do I entice these players??? The best I can come up with is branding it as "Retro Poker Night" with a message like:

- Dealer's choice with old school games too (Hold'em, Draw & Stud).
- Retro clay casino chips, playing cards, and felt.
- Feature cocktail and snacks.
- Bet limits so you don't bust out and end up dealing for everyone else.
- Expect to win/lose about $20 on an average night.
- $40 buy-in so you can keep playing if you get unlucky early.

Any new players will get priority, followed by my "friendly" regulars. I'll give new players priority for the next month's game, which will always be on the "X" day of the month.

I think it's a pretty good start, but feedback is appreciated.

Thx

Trying to get players new (or new-ish) to poker to play anything fixed limit is like pulling teeth. If it's not NLHE, 95% of them will hate it. That's been my experience at least.

This man speaks the truth.

Limit is a hard sell. Which is unfortunate since mixed games are the best. If rather play then than NLHE. And NLHE is my best game.

Try out “circus” games. They are fun, fixed/pot limit games, and split pot due to being hi/lo. The result is players get to see a lot of flops, get involved in a lot of hands, and will take down at least half a pot way more often. You can then start to work in some of the more standard “mixed” games

I had an old school Vegas theme the night I broke out my TRK set. It wasn't limit though.

Get them drunk. Maybe they won't notice it is limit. :D

Things worked out well!

I sent my "retro theme" invitation out to my friends that haven't played before, or haven't played for a long time (like way before covid). The game ran 2 hours longer than the game with my regs, everyone had fun, and they're talking about next time :)

Also, we only played hold'em given there were newbies.

Limit poker continues!

Played again last night and got 3 of the 4 new recruits to return! I followed the same invite process with the drink and food features.

I guess it's working because I'm not recruiting gamblers/NL poker players.

Went again last night.

2 of the 4 new recruits returned. These 2 guys are the new regs! They also invited a good friend if theirs who mentioned being used to NL and limit being "not fun" so don't know if he'll return...

I invited a former coworker in my neighborhood who was new to poker, and he ended up being the biggest winner this game has seen so far - up 45 BBs!
