Argh, 91 entrants and vouchers to the next level event to the Final 18 - i was up nicely when the blinds were 1000/2000 - I was first to act and looked down at A K suited - I raised to 6000 and hijack went all in with more to cover me. I called - he had K Q suited. Ace came down on the flop but he caught a flush on the river - I ended up 24th - so close to advancing and drove home knowing it was a good call but poor tournament decision - I could have waited for others to bust and would have advanced. The poker wisdom was worth the $65 however.

1. Not buying in = guarantees breaking even.
2. Fold your way into advancing = nearly guaranteed money, but far fewer chips. Win a few bucks.
3. Call = probably make the money with chips to go deeper. Some risk, possible big profit.

Since you did #1, Why even consider #2? You did the right thing.

Exactly. We just use the 1c/2c games as an excuse to meet up and play cards lol. We spend more on the beer and food than the $2-5 buy in, its great practice though.

Finally gave the 5/5 another crack. My bankroll doesn’t really support me playing these stakes, so I mostly avoid it. It seems a much easier game than the 1/3 though, which is just full of idiots at my local, which oddly makes it harder.

In a perfect world, we would all have CPCs and minty casino Paulsons for our home games. Reality is different for some of us.

Based on his avatar, I'm assuming this is TeeJay's set. He's a relatively new member who appears to have gone to some effort to improve what he's got by designing, printing and sticking custom labels. Dice chips -> China clays -> used casino chips -> customs is a path that many members of this site have taken or are in the middle of now, myself included. Let's encourage members who are just getting started on that path.

I've started out with Dice chips, went on to two different kinds of labelled plastics. Even after I found this forum I didn't immediately get clays, but instead stock ceramics and later custom ceramics first.

It might look like a waste at a quick glance, or a long walk that'd be unnecessary to take, but I think it's best if your chips evolve with your interest in poker and stuff.

Taking pure collectors who only buy chips to look at them out of the equation - why would every single poker game host would need a set of extremely expensive custom clays starting right witht heir very first game? Many will lose interest in that hobby down the road relatively soon. If all those had purchased high-quality chips right at the beginning, that's what I would call a waste. Only very few people really know what they want for such long time spans into the future - those are the only candidates where going straight to highest-quality would make sense.

And fact: It would be far worse if these dice chips weren't even labelled with denominations.

I can answer this question easily if you take the word ~custom~ out of it.

It's called resale value. Buying cheap chips that lose value is the real waste.

Cheap chips depreciate before you even receive the shipment, and the cheaper the chip, the more 'value' it loses. Expensive chips typically retain their value, even after mild use and over time. Somebody who loses interest in the hobby and wants to sell off their chips will end up much better off financially (excluding poker losses) by having bought expensive chips vs cheap ones.

Custom chips (of any kind), on the other hand, rarely retain their value. Not recommended for newbies.

I too have dice chips. I started with custom ABS chips, then went through ceramics, and then into China Clay and CPCs at the same time. All still hit the table on occasion (except the dice chips) - no shame there. But when viewing pics of stacks, the ones that bring the greatest joy are the super-pretty chips. Just as you would expect from a chip collector's forum.

Understandable, eventually I want to upgrade to a custom set because its hard to find sets of chips in cent denominations, especially 0.01/0.05/0.10s. Plus the whole set of 400 chips cost $25 lol.

I've only been playing for a few months, so right now I'm more focused on the strategic aspect of poker than anything.

Ended up at the casino since the home game cash game (after the tournament) I was going to didn’t get going supposedly (though I heard otherwise lol). Forgot to take a final stack pic since it was 3am and I was exhausted. Ended up winning $950. Played $1/2 ($5) PLO.

OP is obviously interested enough to join, read, post, and has made an effort to improve what he's got by printing and sticking custom labels. Why shit on his head by telling him that his chips aren't good enough? Failing to recruit is how an organization dies, but actively discouraging new membership will kill it a lot faster.

I apologize to TeeJay if I was insulting to him. In this thread (on the same page even) we bantered about the awesomeness of penny poker. I didn't intend to insult him, and as he "liked" the posts, I didn't think that I had.

If I insulted you however, please let me know via PM. I don't want to crap up this great thread.
