i posted about this in the tournament and cash game thread with little response. I'm really interested in giving this a try. Please vote for your favorite or add your own ideas in thread. I did find some of these online. Some were my ideas.
- Flop swap - trade one of your cards with a card from the flop. (Played in turn only after flop)
- Super Pineapple- dealt third card anytime (played in turn anytime)
- Exchange program- trade one of your cards for a new card from deck. (Played in turn anytime)
- Passive aggressive- opponents can only check and/or call on a given street. (Played after action is
- Double double - double the small and big bling for 1 hand. (Played before first card is dealt)
- Show one- all opponents must show 1 card. (Only one person can play this card per hand)
- Run it twice (played when all in)
- Chip and a chair- insurance when all in. If busted return with 1 big blind ( played when all in. Bef
- None of the above-- stupid idea
Yes. The three cards used in the tournament Negraneau describes seem less disruptive than the ones listed above. I wouldn't one playing in a tournament with those cards.I think I idea is everyone getting 3. Each layer doesn't have a bag full of magic tricks. It adds a level of strategy. Check out dnegs blog

My idea is, "Stick to the poker, and play Hocus instead."Please vote for your favorite
hmmby someone who was forced to play poker
Poker's a big deal for their family. All the kids start to learn while they are in single-digit years, and the family has an annual tourney at Thanksgiving which, apparently, you don't get to say no to. His dislike for the game motivated him to design Hocus in order to "fix" some of the aspects he doesn't like.
Well, for starters, I still think that poker is fun as-is - regardless of the variant -- and doesn't get better or 'more fun' with any of "improvements" suggested above.Even for very little money in a social setting? I think it would make the game fun again.
Each Santa bag contains the following (three chips each):
- $5 buy-in for T5000 chips with unlimited re-buys for first hour
- 10-minute blind levels, T10K add-on for $5 at end of re-buy period
- A "Santa's Bag of Presents" at each table is filled with both tournament chips and color-coded 'special' chips. Players draw from the bag at appropriate times and either add the tourney chip to their stack, or follow the instructions associated with each colored-chip.
- any time you "win with Santa" (red King in the hole) at showdown, T1000 bonus chips are added to your stack and you get an optional Santa bag draw
- any time you win at showdown with a "lump of coal" (a black Ace or black Deuce in your hand or on the board) you must draw from the Santa bag
- any time your losing hand reaches showdown and contains either Santa (red king) or coal (black Ace or Deuce), you can optionally draw from the Santa bag. Be careful what you ask for.
Colored chip instructions:
- T100, T500, T1000, T5000 tournament chips
- red "Merry Christmas"
- white "Secret Santa"
- green "Gift Exchange"
- blue "I think I saw a reindeer"
- gray "Christmas in Omaha"
- black "Bah Humbug"
All special chips are removed from the Santa's bag at the end of the re-buy period. Any special chips in play are exchanged for a free add-on.
- Merry Christmas (red) - free re-buy if busted, or free add-on at end of re-buy period
- Secret Santa (white) - you are feeling so generous that you will be moving ALL-IN blind on the next hand
- Gift Exchange (green) - exchange all of your chips with the player to your left
- I saw a Reindeer (blue) - can be played at any time, and forces all opponents with a live hand to immediately expose one hole card
- Christmas in Omaha (gray) - this chip can be exchanged for two additional hole cards
- Bah Humbug (black) - must be displayed until you win a pot or go bust. While in your possession, you are dealt only one hole card.
That take seems just a mite harsh.Definitely feels close minded around here....Please PCF gods forgive me for saying "make poker fun again".
It seems to me that what we're saying is, if poker or some casino/circus variety thereof stops being fun, then we'd rather just stop playing for a while & start drinking - or play a different game, or read a book, or watch a movie, or [fill in the blank] - rather than change poker into something else. We simply largely prefer to keep our poker, poker - or at least some circus variety thereof.I think it would make the game fun again. It's almost a drinking game.

.......I'm interested in all games and creating a strategy to beat those games. I may not like this variation myself but I'd try.
This feels very similar to what I suggested in OP. Merry Christmas. However, we do run an occasional "Holiday Fun Tournament" -- a $5 entry T5000 fun-fest filled with all sorts of stupid fun rules:
It's a fun diversion, but it's not poker. And it's certainly not something I'd like to do more than once per year.![]()
